New Projected Timeline For Steelers To Receive Aaron Rodgers' Decision Is Laughable

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the only teams in the NFL that do not have a projected starting quarterback for the 2025 regular season after the first full week of 2025 free agency. Justin Fields is off the table, while Russell Wilson is essentially on hold, waiting for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision on his next team, or retirement. It is anyone's guess as which direction the veteran will go, but the organizations involved are at a significant disadvantage as the draft approaches. In a class that does not have stout quarterback prospects, it's even more important to know if scouting the position is necessary.

Rodgers is known for being an extremely private person so if something is "reported" about his decision-making, it isn't always accurate unless it comes up on the Pat McAfee Show. With that said, some individuals are a little more plugged into league circles compared to others. An update on Monday night is quite terrifying, but laughable at the same time.

Ian Rapoport appeared on an episode of The Insiders on NFL Network and theorized that the future Hall of Famer could wait a lot longer than expected to decide what the next step in his career might be. A couple of years ago, it took several months after the regular season and a "darkness retreat" for the signal-caller to decide if he wanted to retire or not. That is a possibility once again.

"I don't get the sense that Rodgers is in a hurry at all," Rapoport said. "Could it go all the way until the draft like it did two years ago? Maybe it could."

At this point, some may believe that the Steelers are better off simply telling Rodgers that he can go elsewhere, but it won't be in Pittsburgh. An offer is probably on the table, but no franchise should be thrown into this holding pattern for much longer. Every veteran has the right to take time to think about the future, but waiting until essentially May isn't the right thing to do when teams need to build a roster, particularly on offense, around a quarterback.

Wilson was playing some pretty good football for the Steelers in 2024 until the team collapsed down the stretch. After losing Fields to the New York Jets, it sure seems as if it's either going to be Rodgers, Wilson, or Mason Rudolph starting in the Steel City. Wilson visited with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, but the fact that he still has not signed a contract makes one believe that he is waiting for Rodgers to ditch Pittsburgh.

Both the Steelers and Giants are patiently waiting for Rodgers to make his decision, but it seems ludicrous for both franchises to wait until late April for that to come. No team has time to wait around for a 41-year-old that certainly brings some controversy into any locker room. If Pittsburgh is okay with Rodgers taking another six weeks or so, it proves just how desperate the organization has become, highlighting how badly it has fumbled the situation since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

It's not easy to find a franchise quarterback and Pittsburgh is finding that out the hard way. One man essentially led the way since the 2004 campaign and once he left after the 2021 season, nothing has been in sync since. Bringing in a guy like Rodgers doesn't solve that either, as he could decide to retire any year now. This has been an organizational failure that many must be held accountable for. Now, the franchise sits and waits in desperate fashion for an answer from a 20-year veteran.
