The Pittsburgh Steelers' remain to be at the forefront of rumors surrounding the open starting quarterback position. Despite the steady stream of updates and speculative reports, the core of the situation remains unchanged: the Steelers are essentially in a holding pattern, patiently awaiting Aaron Rodgers' decision. With no clear indication of when Rodgers will make his choice, the Steelers must proactively explore alternative quarterback options, exploring beyond conventional approaches and considering more unconventional, "out-of-the-box" ideas. The dynamic landscape of NFL free agency continues to unfold, presenting a wealth of opportunities for the Steelers to acquire a suitable quarterback. Furthermore, the possibility of creating strategic trades remains an open avenue for the team to pursue, potentially unlocking access to quarterbacks who may not be available in free agency.

While rumors swirl around a Kirk Cousins trade, due to his position with the Atlanta Falcons and the team's investment in Michael Penix Jr., one quarterback remains largely overlooked: Joe Milton of the New England Patriots. According to reports, the Patriots are willing to explore trade options for Milton, as they have solidified their quarterback position with Drake Maye. Bill Volin of the Boston Globe confirmed this information.

"The Patriots probably would like to move Milton this offseason, in part to give [Drake] Maye some breathing room and remove any doubt that the franchise believes in him," Volin shared.

The Patriots' willingness to part ways with Milton is mirrored by his own desire for a new opportunity. With Joshua Dobbs established as a dependable backup to Maye, the Patriots feel secure in their quarterback depth. Milton, meanwhile, is seeking a situation where he can actively contribute on the field.

"Milton likely would welcome a trade to a team that gives him a better chance to win a starting job, or at least get on the field," Volin confirmed.

Milton, entering his second year in the NFL, entered the league as a sixth-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Standing at 6'5", Milton has gained attention for his exceptional arm strength, a trait that has consistently impressed scouts and analysts. However, his accuracy had been a point of conflict for some, with critics questioning his ability to consistently place the ball where intended. Milton's performance in the Patriots' Week 18 matchup against the Buffalo Bills served as a compelling counterargument to those who doubted his accuracy. In that game, Maye participated in only one possession before the coaching staff entrusted the quarterbacking duties to Milton for the remainder of the game. Milton seized the opportunity, delivering an impressive performance that showcased his capabilities. He demonstrated a notable level of accuracy, completing 22 out of 29 pass attempts, accumulating 241 passing yards, and throwing for one touchdown without a single interception.

Adding to his impressive stat line, Milton also displayed his athleticism and versatility by rushing for a touchdown in the first quarter, further solidifying his impact on the game. This performance not only provided a glimpse into Milton's potential, but also served as a testament to his ability to perform under pressure, effectively silencing some of the doubts surrounding his accuracy.

What Does This Mean For The Steelers?

Amidst the ongoing speculation surrounding Rodgers, the potential re-signing of Russell Wilson, and trade discussions involving Cousins, Volin provided valuable insights into the connection between Milton and the Steelers.

"Milton makes sense if Rodgers goes elsewhere, and the Steelers value Milton's upside over the declining skills of Wilson or Kirk Cousins," Volin wrote in the Boston Globe.

Last year, the Steelers demonstrated strong financial planning by securing both Wilson and Justin Fields on short-term, cost-effective contracts. In contrast, acquiring Rodgers would represent a significantly greater financial commitment, and reports suggest the Steelers are primarily interested in a one-year quarterback deal, with the aim of identifying their long-term franchise quarterback either in the current or next year's draft.

Given the possibility that Rodgers may not join the team, the Steelers must develop a contingency plan, potentially focusing on a financially smart move for the long-term, even though they have the financial means to take on the commitment. Milton remains under the terms of his rookie contract, a detail that Volin included in his article.

"Milton will make a total of $3.225 million over the next three years ($960,000 in 2025), with no guarantees. That’s league-minimum money for a player who, if he can put it all together, has the potential to be a superstar, at the most important position in the NFL," Volin shared.

By making a fiscally responsible quarterback acquisition for the second year running, the Steelers can effectively balance their immediate needs with their long-term objectives. This allows for the continued development of a competitive team while keeping the door open for drafting a quarterback in the near future.
