Steelers' Quarterback Situation Definitely Not Being Taken Seriously: "It's Just This Attitude [Pittsburgh Has] Had"

The Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves lacking major depth at the quarterback position. After drafting former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round of the draft, the Steelers QB room consists of Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and Howard. With a true starting quarterback yet to be signed to the Steelers roster, questions surrounding who the team's Week 1 starter will be remain at large. With Rudolph currently slated to be the team's starting QB on opening day come September, the Steelers are expected to keep an eye on Howard's improvement in training camp and the free agency market moving forward.

After failing to re-sign both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, the Steelers now find themselves with one of the most lackluster and depleted quarterback rooms in all of football. The addition of Howard may prove to be crucial for Pittsburgh, as Howard is a five-year college veteran and National Champion who has shown major signs of improvement throughout rookie minicamp. Howard is expected to compete for the QB1 role with both Rudolph and Thompson, as the Steelers have yet to acquire another veteran arm from the trade market or free agency.

With many fans expressing their frustration all over social media, the Steelers continue to evaluate available signal-callers in hopes of landing some veteran QB depth. As we approach the start of training camp, one realistic option for Pittsburgh continues to be 4x NFL MVP, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers, who is currently one of the only starting caliber veteran arms still available on the market, is arguably past his prime, but can still add some much needed firepower to the Steelers' offense. In what will more than likely be his final NFL season, Rodgers continues to keep his options open and is expected to make a decision in the near future. With that said, NFL analyst Gregg Rosenthal recently weighed in on the Steelers' current QB situation.

"It's just this attitude the Steelers have had with not taking the quarterback position that seriously," Rosenthal explained. "[They are] Trying to win in a way that Tomlin could win way back in the day, but he always won with Ben Roethlisberger at his best."

Rosenthal, who didn't hold back when addressing the Steelers' quarterback room, is one of many who believes Rudolph is not a starting caliber QB. With Rodgers yet to make a decision and Howard continuing to shine in rookie minicamp, the former Buckeye continues to emerge as a legitimate starting option for Week 1.

Howard, who is coming off a National Championship in his final season as a Buckeye, was drafted with the 185th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He was considered to be one of the top steals during the event by many. While the Steelers have yet to find a real solution at QB1, the team will remain cautious and are expected to leave all options open moving forward.

Steelers' QB Situation Nearing A Solution

With Rudolph currently projected as the Steelers' starting QB and as fans continue to voice their frustration, Pittsburgh is expected to ramp up the aggression in their pursuit of a reliable, veteran quarterback. After trading star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last week, the Steelers now find themselves with three third-round picks in 2026. With a surplus of trade assets at hand, Pittsburgh may emerge as a top trade partner with multiple teams around the league in the near future.

As the Steelers continue to prepare for the start of training camp, fans should continue to keep a close eye on the team's QB room. With Rodgers inching closer to a decision and the Steelers continuing to add trade assets, Pittsburgh's starting QB sweepstakes may finally be coming to a close.
