Keeanu Benton, a defensive tackle for the Steelers, recently appeared on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast to talk all things Steelers. During the interview, veteran defensive lineman and podcast host Cam Heyward asked Benton which of the Steelers' newly drafted rookies he believed would make the most immediate and significant impact on the team.
"I'm thinking the first round pick, the D-lineman [Derrick Harmon]," Benton said. "I think he's going to have a big impact playing left end, just think he got to come in ready, and ready to work."
Derrick Harmon was selected by the Steelers with their first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2025 NFL Draft. This selection quickly became a large topic of conversation among everyone. Leading up to the draft, there had been a great deal of speculation surrounding which direction the Steelers would go with their first-round choice, as the team had several key positions that needed to be addressed. Benton, being a fellow D-lineman adds credibility with his remarks regarding Harmon. He knows what to look for and what it takes at the position.

In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers clearly made defense a top priority, showing a commitment to reinforcing their identity as a tough, physical football team. Despite having several offensive needs, particularly at quarterback and wide receiver, the Steelers used multiple early-round picks to strengthen their defensive line and secondary. This reflects the organization’s belief that defense wins championships and offers stability, especially during times of uncertainty on offense.
Harmon began his collegiate career at Michigan State University, where he developed into a key presence on the defensive line. Seeking to elevate his game further, he transferred to the University of Oregon for the 2024 season. At Oregon, Harmon made an immediate impact, starting all 14 games. His performance was known as exceptional strength and technique, leading all FBS interior linemen in pressures during the season. His versatility allowed him to play multiple positions along the defensive front, making him a valuable asset for various defensive schemes.
Harmon's journey to the NFL was not without personal challenges. During his freshman year at Michigan State, his mother, suffered a stroke and was placed on life support. Tragically, she passed away shortly after Harmon visited her in the hospital to share the news of his NFL Draft selection. This profound personal loss has been a source of motivation for Harmon, driving him to honor his mother's memory through his dedication and performance on the field.

Benton’s comments about Harmon carry significant weight, especially given that both players share the same position on the field as defensive tackles.
