It’s widely known that the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a chaotic and uncertain situation at the quarterback position. With no clear starter currently in place, the circumstances have sparked widespread debate and concern for both fans and analysts. While most teams across the league have already secured their starting quarterbacks, Steelers fans are left in uncertainty, growing increasingly anxious about the direction of the team.

Given how much attention the quarterback situation is receiving, fans have plenty of questions, particularly why the Steelers didn’t stick with one of last year’s quarterbacks amid all this uncertainty. Justin Fields was a clear fan favorite, and when asked why Fields resonated so much with supporters, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shared his own praise for the young quarterback when answering fans' questions.
"He played winning football, didn't turn the ball over, executed how the coaches wanted him to play," Fittipaldo responded. "The funny thing is he did it well, but I think that's the reason he left too. He didn't want to be handcuffed with the offense."
Fields’ time with the Steelers was notable with both promise and challenge. He was acquired as a young, dynamic quarterback still on his rookie contract with the Chicago Bears, and Fields quickly showed flashes of his athleticism and playmaking ability, earning respect from fans and teammates. Although he wasn’t initially the clear starter, as veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was brought in too and expected to start, an injury to Wilson's calf before the regular season gave Fields a chance to step into the leading role and show his skills. Fields led the team through a promising start for the organization, producing a 4-2 record as the starter. However, despite his hopeful performances, he was eventually benched when Wilson returned from injury.

Since Fields was signed to a one-year, financially sound contract, the Steelers ultimately chose not to re-sign him, allowing him to enter free agency in 2025. He eventually signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets, where he is expected to take on the starting quarterback role for the upcoming season.
Many fans feel like Fields hasn't been given a fair chance. His time in Chicago was a mix of growth and setback, as he learned the challenges and complexities of the professional level. Fields showcased his impressive athleticism and strong arm, making plays both through the air and on the ground. However, inconsistency and injuries limited his ability to fully establish himself as the Bears’ franchise quarterback. The Bears also dealt with a struggling offensive line, which many fans pointed to as a key factor behind Fields' inconsistent efficiency. Some fans are now saying the Steelers made the right move by letting him walk.
Steelers Look Ahead With Quarterback Plans
With Fields signing a deal with the Jets, Steelers fans are now urged to focus on the team’s future beyond him. Although many believed Fields could become the franchise’s next cornerstone, the Steelers clearly had different plans. It’s no secret that the Steelers are the leading contender to sign veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, despite the flurry of rumors, Rodgers has yet to make any official commitment.

Although each update on the Rodgers situation seems to drag things out even further, the Steelers' front office has continued to project a sense of calm and patience, suggesting they remain confident in eventually landing him. Team President and Owner Art Rooney II recently stated that the organization is willing to wait a bit longer, reinforcing that belief in Rodgers.
Regardless of whether Rodgers ultimately signs with the Steelers, it's clear he's not the long-term solution for the team. At 41 years old, Rodgers is currently the oldest active player in the NFL. His focus seems to be on finishing his future Hall of Fame career on a strong note, while the Steelers aim to bring in an experienced veteran to serve as a bridge quarterback. This would give the organization time to either identify or develop a young talent they believe can lead the franchise into the future.
