Offseason programs are officially underway for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they begin to prepare for the upcoming season. These programs not only offer a valuable opportunity for players to sharpen their on-field skills, but also play a crucial role in building team camaraderie and strengthening chemistry within the roster. For some players, they also represent a chance at redemption, an opportunity to bounce back from injuries sustained in the previous season.

One of those players looking to make a strong return is Steelers' offensive tackle Troy Fautanu. As offseason programs got underway, Fautanu took time to speak with the media. When asked about his recovery journey from last seasonβs injury, he offered an open and honest response, giving insight into his mindset and determination moving forward.
"I wouldn't say I handled it best some of the time, I would say I was my biggest enemy," Fautanu said.
Fautanuβs rookie season with the Steelers was unfortunately cut short due to a knee injury, a very disappointing setback for the highly anticipated first-round draft pick. Selected 20th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Fautanu was expected to make an immediate impact on the offensive line. However, his season was ended before he could fully showcase his talents, forcing him to shift his focus toward recovery and rehabilitation.

Although Fautanu faced challenges early in his recovery, he revealed that once he made a key adjustment, the process became significantly smoother. Speaking with the media, he opened up about how he managed to push through those difficulties and what helped him stay focused and motivated throughout the journey.
"Once I did lock in and really just focus on day to day, I really turned the corner of my recovery," Fautanu responded.
Fautanu sustained his injury during a practice leading up to the Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. As a result, he was placed on injured reserve and sidelined for the remainder of the season. However, with a clean bill of health heading into this year, Fautanu is expected to make a significant impact, provided he can stay injury-free.
The Steelers' offensive line is experiencing a major overhaul in 2025, with a focus on building around youth and long-term development. Over the last two drafts, the team has made significant investments in this unit, selecting Fautanu in the first round of 2024, center Zach Frazier in the second round, and guard Mason McCormick in the fourth. Adding to this group is Broderick Jones, the Steelers' 2023 first-round pick, who is now moving into the starting role at left tackle. Fautanu is expected to line up at right tackle, forming a promising foundation for the offensive front.
The offensive line is such a crucial part of the offense that often gets overlooked. These players are responsible for protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes for the backs, essentially determining how effective an offense can be. Without a strong and cohesive offensive line, even the most talented quarterbacks and skill players can struggle to make an impact. A solid line not only provides time and space for plays to develop, but also sets the physical tone of the game. In short, the success of an offense often begins, and ends, with the offensive line.
Steelers Are Building A Strong Offense
The Steelers' offensive linemen will have plenty of new playmakers to protect this upcoming season. While much of the attention has been focused on the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, there have been several other notable additions to the offense. One of the biggest moves was the acquisition of dynamic veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf, who brings a powerful presence and valuable experience to a young receiving corps.

The Steelers also strengthened their ground game by selecting running back Kaleb Johnson in the 2025 NFL Draft. Although he may not step in as the immediate starter, Johnson is expected to see a solid share of carries early on. With his talent and potential, he could emerge as a key contributor and possibly develop into the long-term solution at running back for Pittsburgh.
