The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced a busy and widely discussed offseason, marked by major roster changes. This period has seen important new additions alongside significant departures. These departures have created crucial gaps that fans are eager to see addressed. With offseason programs now underway, it’s an exciting time for fans as they anticipate how the roster will come together.

Several rumors have been making headlines lately. One recent rumor suggested that the Steelers were interested in Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. However, on a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly dismissed those rumors. He revealed that, according to his direct sources, the rumor is untrue.

"Almost instantly I was told it was bogus," Kaboly shared.

Currently, the Steelers have four notable tight ends on their roster, led by Pat Freiermuth, along with Connor Heyward, Darnell Washington, and Donald Parham Jr. This depth makes it unclear why the Steelers would be interested in adding another tight end like Smith. However, Smith brings unique skills that could provide a valuable boost to the offense.

The Steelers currently face a significant void in their receiving corps after the departure of George Pickens, who had become a key part of their offensive attack. Pickens’ exit has left the team without a clear and reliable second receiving option to complement their newly acquired veteran wide receiver, DK Metcalf. Metcalf, who joined the Steelers earlier this offseason, is widely regarded as a top talent and is expected to be the primary receiving threat.

Smith is known as a dynamic receiving threat at the tight end position. With his combination of size, speed, and athleticism, he poses a matchup nightmare for defenses, able to line up both in-line and out wide. Smith is really good at finding soft spots in coverage and making contested catches, making him a reliable target in the passing game. His ability to stretch the field and create separation adds a valuable asset to any offense, forcing defenses to account for him as both a blocker and a legitimate downfield weapon.

Not only does Smith have the receding abilities that the Steelers offense is somewhat lacking, but Smith has connections to members of the staff on the Steelers. In fact, Smith and Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith have experience working together. Arthur Smith and Jonnu Smith share a professional relationship that dates back to their early years with the Tennessee Titans. When Jonnu was drafted in 2017, Arthur served as his tight ends coach, helping develop his skills on the field. As Arthur advanced in his career, he was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Titans, continuing to work closely with Jonnu and deepening their partnership. Their connection remained strong, leading to a reunion in 2023 when Arthur became the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and they later acquired Jonnu, highlighting the trust and value Arthur places on Jonnu’s abilities.

A strong relationship between a player and a coach is crucial for success on and off the field. When trust and communication are solid, players feel more confident and motivated, which helps them perform at their best. Coaches who understand their players’ strengths, weaknesses, and personalities can tailor their guidance to maximize development and address challenges effectively. Ultimately, a good player-coach relationship can elevate both individual careers and the overall success of the team.

Steelers May Or May Not Add Another Receiving Threat

With this rumor being dismissed, it seems unlikely that Smith will join the team, but it’s important to remember that nothing is certain until it’s officially confirmed. That said, the receiving room still has a noticeable gap to fill. As offseason programs get underway, current Steelers players will have the opportunity to prove themselves and compete for playing time. Whether the team decides to add a new player or rely on existing talent remains to be known, and fans will be eagerly watching.
