The Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves in one of the most unique and uncertain quarterback situations in the entire NFL. Unlike most teams that have a clear-cut starter heading into the season, the Steelers face a noticeable and pressing gap at the most important position on the field. After completely overhauling their quarterback room from last season, the team has made several moves to address the void, bringing in new faces and parting ways with former signal-callers. However, despite these acquisitions, none of the quarterbacks currently on the roster are widely projected or expected to take on the starting role when the regular season begins.

With offseason programs now underway, more attention is being directed toward the quarterbacks currently on the Steelers' roster. As uncertainty lingers around the starting role, fans and analysts alike are beginning to consider backup plans and look at various scenarios. On a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly weighed in on the situation, specifically discussing whether rookie quarterback Will Howard could be the one to step into the starting role.
"If he's in the game this year, you might be getting your top 10 pick", Kaboly shared.
Kaboly made it clear that his comments were in no way a knock on Howard, but rather a reflection of the reality that comes with starting a rookie quarterback. Howard was chosen in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, with the Steelers waiting until the final day to make the selection. Leading up to the draft, there was a wide range of opinions on whether the Steelers would prioritize adding a quarterback, making Howard’s selection a topic of debate and uncertainty among fans and analysts.
While many fans are optimistic about Howard’s potential and see him as a possible future franchise quarterback, it’s unlikely that he’ll take on that role this season. The Steelers have rushed young quarterbacks in the past, even if they had to, and it's doubtful they’ll repeat that mistake. Howard still has room to grow and develop, and early reports from offseason programs suggest he’s putting in the work and learning as he adjusts to the NFL level.

If the season kicked off today, Mason Rudolph would likely be the starting quarterback. However, fan opinions on Rudolph are mixed, as some question whether he can consistently lead the team over the course of a full season. That said, his dedication and work ethic are widely respected. Although he rejoined the Steelers this offseason, it’s not his first time with the team. After spending one season with the Tennessee Titans, Rudolph returned to Pittsburgh once again in a backup role. While much of his career has been spent as a backup, he has stepped up in key moments and helped deliver important wins for the Steelers.
With the uncertainty surrounding the starting role, Howard is gaining valuable experience as he climbs the depth chart during offseason programs. With more reps coming his way, he’s getting crucial on-field practice that will help accelerate his development and prepare him for future opportunities. This early exposure to NFL speed and play-calling is essential for a rookie looking to make the leap from college to the pros. At the same time, Rudolph is essentially functioning as the team's current starting quarterback. He’s been taking the majority of first-team snaps, which allows him to further solidify his command of the offense and continue building chemistry with his teammates. While the starting job is far from officially decided, both quarterbacks are making the most of their respective roles in preparation for the season ahead.

Steelers Are Still Awaiting An Answer From Aaron Rodgers
It’s no secret that the Steelers are considered frontrunners to land veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers would bring a wealth of experience and talent to the team, but his drawn-out decision making process has caused frustration among fans eager for clarity. Reports indicate that the Steelers have already extended an offer and are now waiting on Rodgers to make his choice. In the meantime, Rudolph and Howard continue to take full advantage of offseason programs, developing their skills, learning the system, and staying ready in case Rodgers decides not to join the team.
