The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially kicked off their offseason programs. Steelers' Kaleb Johnson talks to the media during the 2025 Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
One of the standout rookies so far is running back Kaleb Johnson. He’s taking full advantage of the offseason programs to develop his skill set and absorb knowledge from the veteran players around him. While speaking with the media, Johnson emphasized that he's been placing a strong focus on improving his pass protection and outlined his commitment to growing in that area.
"(Jaylen) Warren, I’ve been on him every day about it, questioning him how to do this and how to do that, and making sure I get my technique down. … That’s my main thing right now," Johnson said.
In simple terms, pass protection means blocking defenders to give the quarterback enough time to throw the ball. Running backs are responsible for identifying blitzes, picking up linebackers or defensive backs who break through the line, and using proper technique to stop them. This requires not just strength and toughness, but also awareness, quick decision-making, and solid communication with the offensive line. A running back who can effectively pass protect becomes a more complete and valuable asset to the offense.
Johnson was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. This selection held extra weight since Pittsburgh did not have a second-round pick, putting added importance on their third-round choice. The move came during a period of transition at the running back position, as the Steelers parted ways with Najee Harris in the offseason. Harris, whose fifth-year option was declined by the team, later signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, opening the door for new talent like Johnson to step in and make an impact.

The Steelers also have veteran running back Jaylen Warren on the roster, and Johnson mentioned that he’s been using the opportunity to learn from him. Warren has become a valuable and reliable presence in the Steelers’ backfield. Initially joining the team as an undrafted free agent, Warren quickly proved himself with his tough running style, strong work ethic, and versatility. Known for his ability to gain tough yards and contribute in both the running and passing game, he has earned consistent playing time and the trust of the coaching staff. Beyond his on-field production, Warren has embraced a leadership role, especially as younger players like Johnson look to him for guidance.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding who will emerge as the Steelers' starting running back for the upcoming season. Now that offseason programs are in full swing, both Warren and Johnson have the opportunity to showcase their abilities and earn their roles. Some fans and analysts predict that Johnson could eventually lead the team in carries, while others believe the Steelers may opt for a more balanced, half and half split in the backfield.
Steelers Have A Lot To Prove In 2025
The Steelers head into the upcoming season with a chip on their shoulder and plenty to prove. After a crazy offseason filled with major roster changes, coaching adjustments, and ongoing uncertainty at key positions, particularly quarterback, the team finds itself under the microscope. Critics have questioned the front office's decisions, the team's ability to compete in a tough AFC North, and whether the Steelers can return to their winning ways. With a passionate fan base expecting results, the pressure is on for Pittsburgh to show that its retooled roster and renewed focus can translate into success on the field. This season will be a defining moment for the franchise’s direction.
