The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves at the center of considerable media attention throughout this offseason. Much of the spotlight has focused on the major roster moves they’ve made, which has left some noticeable gaps in the roster that continue to dominate headlines. However, beneath the surface of these high-profile changes, there are growing internal concerns within the organization that are starting to raise red flags for a number of fans.

Steelers' TJ Watt gets warmed up before Christmas Day game.
Steelers star edge rusher TJ Watt is currently in the midst of contract negotiations, with just one year remaining on his current deal. However, early indications suggest that the process isn’t going as smoothly as one would hope. During a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala discussed a wide range of Steelers topics, including the ongoing situation with Watt’s contract. When the subject came up, Kinkhabwala voiced her support for Watt, emphasizing that changes need to be made within the organization’s approach in order to reach a new agreement.
"Just because you've done business one way, it’s not a reason to keep doing business that way," Kinkhabwala said.
Watt is one of the most vital players of the Steelers' defense, if not the most. His presence consistently elevates the unit, and his leadership both on and off the field has made him one of the most respected figures in the organization. However, the Steelers are currently operating without their star pass rusher, as Watt has not participated in any offseason activities, including mandatory minicamp. By choosing not to show up, he’s sending a clear message to the front office that it’s time for the organization to take his value seriously and make the necessary moves to secure his future with the team.
For those who are frustrated by Watt’s decision to sit out, it’s important to remember that the NFL is, above all else, a business. Watt is a seasoned veteran who has dedicated his entire professional career to the Steelers and has consistently delivered elite-level performances. His choice to miss offseason activities is a strategic move, not a reflection of his commitment or preparation.

The Steelers have experienced a similar situation with Watt before. The last time they finalized an extension with him, the agreement wasn’t reached until roughly 48 hours before the regular season began. This history shows that there is still time to work out a deal, especially with several months remaining before the regular season kicks off. That said, it would clearly be advantageous for both sides to finalize the contract sooner rather than later.
Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it seems the primary reason for the hold-up in contract talks boils down to money. Reports indicate that the Steelers have already presented an offer to Watt, but he has yet to accept it. When Watt signed his last extension, he became the highest-paid defensive player in the league, and it appears he is aiming to secure a similar, or even better, financial commitment this time around.
Steelers Have The Browns To Blame
The Steelers have a team within their own division from the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns to blame for this current situation with Watt. This offseason, the Browns made a major statement by locking up their star edge rusher, Myles Garrett, with a historic contract extension, a four-year deal worth $160 million. It’s highly likely that Watt is seeking a contract that matches or even surpasses that.

The Steelers have the financial resources necessary to sign Watt to a lucrative contract, but it will undoubtedly come at a significant cost. This means the organization will need to carefully weigh whether making such a substantial investment is the right move for the team’s future. Despite the high price tag, reports indicate that both the Steelers are eager to retain Watt, and Watt himself is interested in staying with the team, which suggests that a deal could eventually be reached if both sides find common ground.
