The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most talked-about teams this offseason, making a series of bold moves that have sparked both excitement and debate across the league. These roster changes have not only addressed several key needs, but have also created new questions and gaps that the organization will need to solve moving forward. While high-profile additions, such as veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, have dominated the headlines and drawn the most attention, it’s important to note that some of the most impactful decisions may actually be the ones flying under the radar.

One of these underrated, but potentially game-changing moves, was the recent re-signing of Steelers safety DeShon Elliott. Steelers Insider Mark Kaboly recently discussed the new deal on an episode of his podcast, Kaboly + Mack, where he offered strong praise for the decision. Kaboly expressed full support, emphasizing that bringing Elliott back was precisely the kind of move the Steelers needed to strengthen their defense. He noted that Elliott’s presence not only adds depth and stability to the secondary, but also brings valuable off-field traits as well.

"One of the guys chirping late last year was him because it really wasn't living up to his expectations and standards," Kaboly said.

Elliott recently signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Steelers, a deal that is both cost-effective and strategically beneficial for the team. This affordable agreement allows the Steelers to retain a player who has already proven his value on the field and fits well within their defensive system. Elliott’s physical playing style, versatility, and leadership qualities make him a valuable asset in the secondary, especially as the team looks to solidify its defense heading into the new season.

Kaboly continued to speak about the signing in detail, expressing strong support for the move, and he emphasized that Elliott is exactly the type of player the Steelers need right now.

"That's what you need," Kaboly said. "You need accountability, and I don't think that there is a person out there saying, 'Boy, I can't believe they signed DeShon Elliott... I mean I think this is money well spent."

Kaboly pointed out that Elliott is currently one of the most affordable starting safeties in the league, which makes his re-signing an even more valuable move for the Steelers. Getting a player who can make a meaningful impact on the field without breaking the bank is exactly the kind of smart, strategic decision the team needs at this stage. In a league where contracts are rapidly rising, locking in a dependable defensive contributor at a reasonable price is a major win.

Beyond his performance, Elliott also brings something just as important to the locker room, his outspoken nature and strong leadership. He’s known for holding both himself and others accountable, which adds a layer of discipline and unity that can be crucial for a team with playoff aspirations. His presence strengthens not only the defense, but also the overall team culture, making this signing a well-rounded investment for Pittsburgh.

Steelers Have An Emerging Leader

While the contract extension of Elliott may not have generated as many headlines as some of the Steelers' other offseason moves, it has the potential to be one of the most impactful decisions they’ve made. Elliott brings valuable veteran experience to the team, having already proven himself as a reliable and physical safety in his first year with Pittsburgh. Now, as he enters his second season with the organization, he’s in an even better position to step into a stronger leadership role.

It’s often difficult for players to assert themselves and take on leadership responsibilities during their first year with a new team, as they are still adjusting to the system, culture, and building relationships with teammates and coaches. However, with that initial transition behind him, Elliott can now fully embrace the opportunity to lead, both on and off the field. His familiarity with the Steelers' playbook and locker room dynamics will only enhance his ability to contribute, not just through his performance, but also through his leadership presence.
