The Pittsburgh Steelers have been no strangers to media attention, especially this offseason. A series of big moves, including key acquisitions and departures, have kept the team in the headlines and have started plenty of conversation among fans and analysts alike. With offseason programs now in full swing, the focus has shifted to the field, where returning players are beginning to train and build chemistry, not just with each other, but also with the new faces that have recently joined the roster. It's an exciting time for the franchise as the new team starts to take shape.

Adding to the growing excitement surrounding the Steelers' offseason programs, Steelers Insider Mark Kaboly recently published a piece highlighting some standout performances. In the article, Kaboly identified a group of players he viewed as "winners" and "losers" based on their performances and impressions over the past few weeks. These evaluations were drawn from his observations while attending team practices and workouts. Among the names that stood out, the first player Kaboly listed as a clear "winner" was none other than tight end Pat Freiermuth, who made a strong impression with his play and presence on the field.
"He was front and center during everything, whether it was hitting the blocking sled or making sure he was the one that the quarterbacks warmed up with," Kaboly wrote. "This could be the breakout year for Freiermuth."
Freiermuth has quickly become an important part of the Steelers' offense. He’s known for having reliable hands, running clean routes, and playing with toughness. As a tight end, he’s been a dependable option, especially in short-yardage plays and near the end zone. It will be exciting to see if Kaboly’s prediction holds true and Freiermuth has a breakout season, especially now that he has a future Hall of Fame quarterback throwing him the ball again and a clear void at the wide receiver position that could open up more opportunities for him in the offense.

Another player Kaboly highlighted as a "winner" was outside linebacker Alex Highsmith. With star edge rusher TJ Watt currently struggling with contract negotiations and absent from offseason workouts, additional reps and opportunities have opened up for players like Highsmith to step into a larger role. Kaboly even made the bold prediction that Highsmith could rack up an impressive number of sacks this season and potentially have a breakout year, much like the one he anticipates from Freiermuth.
"Can I say a 13-15 sack season," Kaboly asked. "I wouldn't rule it out."
Highsmith is known for his high energy, quickness, and ability to pressure quarterbacks off the edge. Over the past few seasons, he has continued to improve and become a key part of the Steelers' defense. He’s made a habit of showing up in big moments, getting sacks, rushing quarterbacks, and making plays when the team needs them most. If he stays healthy and keeps playing at a high level, he could have a breakout season and become one of the top stars on Pittsburgh’s defense.

Another player Kaboly labeled as a "winner" was tight end Darnell Washington. Although Freiermuth is the top option at the position for the Steelers, many teams are now leaning into the trend of using two tight ends in their offensive schemes, much like they rotate multiple wide receivers. Kaboly views Washington as a legitimate scoring threat, suggesting he could complement Freiermuth rather than compete with him. While there will naturally be some competition for snaps, the two tight ends could work together to create a dynamic presence in the Steelers' offense.
"Is he going to be a 40-catch guy," Kaboly asked. "No, but he could be a nice red zone weapon."
The Steelers' Other "Winners"
In addition to the names already mentioned, Kaboly also listed a few other standout players he labeled as "winners" from the recent offseason programs. Among them were guard Mason McCormick and wide receiver Calvin Austin III. Both players have taken noticeable steps forward, each making an impact in their respective roles. McCormick has shown promise on the offensive line, while Austin has demonstrated his speed and playmaking ability as a receiver. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as both seem to be making the most of the opportunities presented to them during this crucial part of the offseason.
