Named WR2 Steelers' Calvin Austin III Realizes Big Expectations Follow: "More Work Has To Be Put In"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a series of big moves that have dramatically changed the team's roster, leading to noticeable voids at several key positions. While some areas have been addressed, others remain up in the air. As the team continues to assess its needs and explore options, current players are stepping up during offseason programs, fighting to prove themselves and potentially earn those starting roles. 

While the starting quarterback vacancy was undoubtedly the most discussed issue this offseason, which is now filled by veteran Aaron Rodgers, attention has recently shifted to another critical question: who will be Rodgers' second receiving option behind DK Metcalf? In a media session following a recent minicamp practice, Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni addressed this topic, naming Calvin Austin III as the team’s current wide receiver two (WR2). Shortly after, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly shared Austin’s reaction to the announcement.

"You want to say that you don’t hear it, and you are just working, but at this point, it does mean something to me," Austin said. "I work hard, and that tells me that I have been able to show them how hard I have worked, and the expectations are higher for me. With more expectations, more work has to be put in."

The vacancy at the wide receiver position stems from the trade of former Steelers star, George Pickens. Pickens was originally drafted by Pittsburgh and was heading into the final year of his rookie deal. Rather than extend his contract, the Steelers opted to take the team in a new direction, trading Pickens in exchange for future draft picks to help build for the long-term.

This trade followed the Steelers’ earlier offseason acquisition of Metcalf. Pittsburgh gave away their 2025 second-round draft pick to land the veteran receiver. Unlike Pickens, the Steelers showed immediate commitment to Metcalf by securing him with a substantial long-term contract. He signed a five-year deal worth $150 million, solidifying the team’s confidence in him as a key piece of their offensive future.

Many fans were eager to see these two big personalities share the field. There’s no question that both players bring intense passion and energy to the game, even though at times, that passion can get them in trouble. Another reason people were excited about the pairing was the potential to finally give the Steelers the dynamic receiving duo they've been searching for over the years. Now, even though Metcalf is widely considered an upgrade from last season’s receiving corps, some still feel the team is in a familiar spot, with only one clear receiving threat. 

Now the focus shifts to the future however, and figuring out who will step up to fill this critical position in the offense. The Steelers have certainly been exploring options, keeping an eye on both free agents and potential trade targets involving established wide receivers. Since the departure of Pickens, the team has been linked to several different names across the league. Despite the speculation and ongoing discussions, no official moves have been made just yet, leaving the door open for further developments as the offseason continues.

Steelers Receivers Can Start To Build Chemistry With Rodgers

Even though the Steelers are still actively exploring other options, it’s certainly interesting to hear that Austin would be considered the number two wide receiver if the season were to start today. With offseason programs in full swing and minicamp underway, several receivers are battling not only for that WR2 role, but also for valuable reps and opportunities to contribute. Now that Rodgers is officially on the roster, the team has their clear starting quarterback, and these offseason sessions are the perfect time for receivers to build crucial chemistry with him. For players like Austin, this is a golden opportunity to prove themselves and earn Rodgers’ trust heading into the regular season.
