It was a busy Monday for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins as the teams pulled off several trades that could change the landscape of both organizations for the next few years. It was initially reported that the Steelers had acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey after Ramsey himself posted a video claiming to be breaking the news himself.

Soon after, we realized that Steelers star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was part of the package bringing Ramsey to Pittsburgh. Now we've learned the complete details of the trade. The Steelers are acquiring tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 7th round pick along with Ramsey for Fitzpatrick, and a 2027 5th round selection.

Former Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, #9, enters the field before the game against the Arizona Cardinals at Hard Rock Stadium on Oct. 27, 2024 in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Smith, 29, had 88 receptions for the Dolphins in 2024 for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time after posting a career year. Rumors about Smith being traded to the Steelers have swirled for a few weeks now, but several believed the rumors were orchestrated by Smith's agent Drew Rosenhaus in an attempt to land the tight end with a new contract in Miami.
Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has a long history with Smith after coaching him with the Tennessee Titans and the Atlanta Falcons -- once as his head coach and once as his offensive coordinator. Now the two join for a third time.

As a free agent before the 2024 season, Jonnu Smith signed a two-year contract with the Dolphins for $8.4 million. Smith became a huge weapon for the Dolphins last season outplaying the modest contract. It's being reported by multiple outlets that Smith has agreed to a one-year extension with the Steelers for $12 million. He will count $4 million against the cap in 2025 according to Spotrac.
Steelers' Salary Cap Implications
The Steelers will take on a $6.855 million dead cap hit for the next two seasons for Fitzpatrick's contract. The Dolphins will be on the hook for a $6.745 million dead cap hit this season, and an $18.468 million dead cap hit in 2026. The Dolphins are also on the hook for a $550k and $1.65 million dead cap hit for this season and next for Smith.
