During this offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made a lot of big roster changes that have sparked widespread discussion and debate throughout the media. These changes involved a mix of young, talented rookies and experienced veterans, where all of them are drawing significant attention as everyone keeps a close eye on how this new team will perform.

Recently, rookie defensive lineman Yahya Black made an appearance on The Christian Kuntz Podcast, where the conversation focused heavily on football and his early experiences in the league. The podcast covered a wide range of topics, but one moment that stood out was when Black was talking about the veteran leadership within the Steelers' locker room.

Black shared that he’s looking forward to learning from longtime veteran Cam Heyward, who is widely respected as a leader both on and off the field. Black expressed deep admiration for Heyward’s impact, not just as a player, but also as a role model.

"I haven't talked to Cam [Heyward] as much as I should and like really pick his brain about it, but just watching him, the way he attacks things and goes about his life, it's amazing," Black said.

Black was selected by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, coming out of the University of Iowa. Known for his big size and physical strength, Black brings a powerful presence to the defensive line that the Steelers hope to develop into a long-term asset. His ability to push through offensive lines and create pressure up front fits the gritty, hard-nosed style that Pittsburgh is known for.

This was part of the strategy by the Steelers during this year’s draft, where they placed a clear emphasis on strengthening the defense, using five out of their seven total draft picks on defensive players. This defensive focus highlights the team’s commitment to rebuilding and reinforcing a unit that has both young and experienced players.

One of those respected and experienced veterans on the Steelers’ roster is Heyward. Heyward has long been recognized not only for his high level performance on the field, but also for his exceptional leadership qualities off of it. Throughout his career, he has taken on the role of mentor, guiding and supporting younger players as they adjust to the craziness of the NFL.

Heyward is also known for being one of the loudest voices in the locker room, leading by example, and helping develop the next generation of Steelers talent. His dedication to building up those around him speaks to his desire to leave behind a lasting legacy that extends well beyond his own playing career.

Heyward’s impact reaches far beyond the football field. In 2015, he started The Heyward House Foundation to promote children's literacy, fight hunger and cancer, and provide scholarships in memory of his late father. He also leads several community initiatives, including the annual "Cam’s Kindness Week" and other programs which have positively impacted thousands of lives throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Having a veteran like Heyward still on the roster is incredibly beneficial for the rookies as they start their careers. What’s even more impressive is that the respect between Heyward and the younger players appears to be mutual. In fact, before the draft, Heyward mentioned Black as one of the top defensive linemen in the class, highlighting the respect he has for Black’s abilities.

Steelers' Rookies Still Have Time

Black admitted that he hasn’t yet picked Heyward’s brain as much as he probably should have, but this is totally understandable at the current moment since true practices haven’t officially begun. Although offseason programs are currently underway, there is still plenty of time for Black to tap into Heyward’s knowledge and experience. This time will be crucial for him to adjust not only to the new defensive scheme, but also to the environment and culture of the team itself.
