Door Remains Open For Steelers To Pull Off 1 More Monumental Trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an incredibly active 2025 offseason. General Manager Omar Khan has led the charge in revamping the roster quite a bit. Many believe that the organization has a chance to win soon, but also has a future due to a young core and plethora of draft picks in 2026. There are small holes on the depth chart that could be addressed before training camp begins at the end of July, and one in particular that still stands out is the wide receiver position. Trading for DK Metcalf was a great move, but then moving on from George Pickens seemed counterproductive.

It remains to be see if Khan and the Steelers will target a pass-catcher via trade or free agency. It's not a guarantee that a move is made at all given the recent acquisition of Jonnu Smith. There aren't going to be many wideouts that are made available for a trade as training camp nears, but there is still a very interesting situation developing in the NFC.

Terry McLaurin is loved by fans of the Washington Commanders. Many believe he will be a one-helmet type of player, but it doesn't appear as if the new ownership is ready to get an extension done with the two-time Pro Bowler. He and his camp have likely seen the money being thrown around to receivers and are searching for a lucrative deal themselves.

The big issue for the Commanders is that they have a young core that will need to be paid in the next few years, and the structure of any deal with McLaurin is probably a little bit complex. He isn't expected to be traded, but the Steelers have the resources in the 2026 NFL Draft to potentially acquire the veteran. It takes two to tango, so Khan would probably have to be very convincing if he reached out.

The Steelers have one of the more intriguing cap situations in all of football. While TJ Watt is expected to receive a lucrative deal soon, the organization doesn't have any big-time quarterback contracts to deal with, and might not have one for another four years or so. This will allow the team to be very aggressive, which is why the Metcalf deal was agreed upon.

If Pittsburgh can make a trade attractive enough, a good offer to McLaurin might be like the one Tee Higgins got with the Cincinnati Bengals. A one-two punch in the Steel City featuring Metcalf and McLaurin would be quite lethal. Unfortunately, there aren't reports suggesting that McLaurin is on the trade block, but the Steelers may have the assets in draft capital and the bank to make the Commanders a little bit interested.

It can be argued that the Steelers are one more offensive weapon away from being an extremely dangerous team. Smith could be looked at as the final piece, but if neither Calvin Austin III or Roman Wilson step up, the receiving corps could be just as unreliable as it was in 2024, aside from Pickens. McLaurin would immediately fix that potential issue.

Steelers May Be Better Than Many Think In 2025

Pittsburgh has had one of the best offseason periods throughout the NFL. It has not been quiet, but changes have been made up and down the roster. If four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers can be consistent and remain healthy, the entire AFC could be in for a rude awakening. A trade involving McLaurin might just make the Steelers one of the favorites in the conference as a whole.
