The Pittsburgh Steelers have had no shortage of storylines throughout the 2025 offseason. From major departures to key additions and lingering questions, it's been an eventful few months for the team. One of the most interesting storylines has centered around the wide receiver position. While the early addition of veteran star DK Metcalf brought excitement, the later departure of George Pickens has created a noticeable gap in the receiving corps, sparking widespread discussion about how the Steelers plan to address it.

Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni recently confirmed that Calvin Austin III is currently the team’s wide receiver two. However, despite this, the Steelers continue to be linked to several free-agent wideouts, as questions remain about Austin’s ability to make a significant impact.

Steelers insider, Mark Kaboly, recently joined 93.7 The Fan to talk about the team’s offseason moves, and when asked whether the Steelers plan to address the wide receiver gap via an external option, he wasn't convinced about the idea.

"I think that they will wait to see how this training camp plays out a little bit to see if the Roman Wilson's and the Calvin Austin's can provide what they are looking for," Kaboly said. "I mean they got a big shot in the arm with Jonnu Smith. Now, that's a fallback plan, you know, a chess piece. So all of a sudden it's not as important as it once was."

Jonnu Smith, a tight end acquired in a blockbuster trade as well as cornerback Jalen Ramsey, came to the Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was sent back to the Miami Dolphins. Smith brings all the physical tools of a classic tight end, including strength, blocking ability, and toughness, but what truly elevates his value to the team is his versatility.

He’s not only dependable in traditional tight end responsibilities, but also offers flexibility as a receiving threat, making him a unique and dynamic piece in the Steelers’ evolving offensive scheme. The Steelers not only intend to utilize Smith as a receiving threat to help address the gap at wide receiver, but he was also recognized as the "best in the NFL" when it comes to yards after the catch, an especially impressive accolade for a tight end compared to wide receivers.

Austin is a young receiver for the Steelers with impressive speed, agility, and big-play ability. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Memphis, but missed his entire rookie season due to injury. In 2023, he made his return and showed flashes of his potential, especially on special teams. With the changes taking place at the wide receiver position, Austin is emerging as a potential breakout candidate.

His speed and ability to stretch the field make him a strong contender to step up and play a key role in the offense this season. As offseason programs continue, players like Austin and Roman Wilson are getting valuable opportunities to prove themselves, not only to the coaching staff, but also to the media, which can certainly impact fan perceptions.

While these sessions don't compare to the intensity of regular season games, they still offer a chance for players to showcase their skills and earn their places on the roster. With the Steelers potentially exploring additional roster moves, this is a key time for these players to make strong impressions.

Steelers May Not Add Anyone Else

Although many fans are hoping the Steelers will add another receiver, especially given the number of strong free agents and trade possibilities, the team might decide not to make any further moves.

The Steelers appear confident in their current roster, but history has shown that they are not afraid to surprise fans with unexpected trades that can significantly reshape the team. Metcalf is the clear top pass-catching option, but who will be the second receiver when the regular season kicks off remains uncertain.

Do you think the Steelers should go with Austin as the wide receiver two, or should they add someone new? If you want them to add a player, who would you pick? Let us know in the comments below!
