Steelers' Cam Heyward Delivers Honest Review Of New Jerseys For 2025: "This Is The Problem"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the more traditional teams across the NFL, and the likelihood of the organization ever dropping new, full-time uniforms is extremely low. Fans have seen some other franchises around the league do that in recent years, but Pittsburgh already has some of the best uniforms in the league and does not necessarily need to change them. However, the franchise can drop some alternate and throwback looks, which is what the team did on Monday. Pittsburgh dropped new throwback jerseys that honor the teams from the 1930s.

Pittsburgh announced the new jerseys on Monday morning, and the reception has not been all that great. Some fans hate the uniforms all together, while others just really can't get past the brown pants. Defensive lineman Cam Heyward spoke on the new uniforms during the most recent episode of his podcast, Not Just Football With Cam Heyward, and it is safe to say that the current longest-tenured Steeler is not a fan of the new throwback.

"Yellow helmet, check," Heyward began. "Jersey, check. I like the jersey. But pants, XXXXXXX. Those pants, man, they look like throw up. I love that we're trying something new, but this is the problem we have with the Bumblebees. I think the bumblebees would have looked fire if we had black pants. I think this jersey would have been fire if you had black pants. Or even, I hate to go full yellow, but you could have had some remix in there as well."

The biggest gripe that fans have with the new uniforms is by far the beige pants. Many people have shared the same sentiment as Heyward in wishing that the organization had gone with black pants to complete the look. However, these uniforms were designed to be a throwback to the 1930s, specifically 1933 when the organization wore similar uniforms in the middle of the Great Depression.

When creating throwback uniforms to honor a certain era of the organization, it is hard to make too many changes. The design on the jersey had already been altered quite a bit, so changing up the pants could have been a bad look. This way the organization stayed true to its history, and the team will wear these during a home game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8 on Sunday Night Football

This is the first time a lot of the players on the team will be wearing uniforms that vary from the original home and away uniforms. There have been the Color Rush jerseys and the block letter jerseys, but nothing that has been too much of a fashion risk. The Steelers wore the Bumblebee uniforms from 2012 through 2016, and that was the last time a true throwback uniform was donned by Pittsburgh. The only players on the roster that suited up in those were Heyward and Chris Boswell.

Steelers Fans Should Be Excited About The New Helmet

The yellow helmet is an exciting addition for the Steelers, as the team has not had multiple helmet shells since the 2011 season, before the Bumblebee jerseys. The new helmet shell will obviously go with the throwback uniform, but it would be nice to see it used in other combinations as well. It would probably look fantastic with the Color Rush uniform set, as it would match well with the black jersey and black pants nicely.

Knowing the Steelers, the new helmet shell will probably only be worn with the entire throwback uniform that it is intended to accompany, but the possibilities are endless. The NFL has some rules that limit what teams can do with alternate helmet shells, but wearing them with Color Rush jerseys or other alternates, like the block letter jerseys, is allowed. Pittsburgh has enough uniform options to keep things interesting, and there is always the possibility that these new throwbacks will look better on the field.
