The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves with one of the better quarterback rooms in recent team history entering 2025. Pittsburgh will have Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph solidified as quarterback one and two (QB1 & QB2), while also having Skylar Thompson and rookie Will Howard compete for the third string role.

Many people feel like Rudolph could prove to be a serviceable starter if Rodgers were to get hurt, as Rudolph is a five-year veteran who has proven to hold his own at the starter position in the past. Entering his 21st season, Rodgers is a 41 year old quarterback that is just two seasons removed from a torn Achilles in 2023. Rudolph may prove to play a key role on the Steelers' offense should Rodgers become injured at any point, as the former Tennessee Titans quarterback is a player that would have no problem jumping into a game at any point in the year if necessary.
Steelers Insider Mark Kaboly was recently asked for his thoughts on having Rudolph as a backup option behind Rodgers, as Kaboly claims he would feel more than comfortable with Rudolph jumping in as the starter throughout the season.
"If Aaron Rodgers gets hurt again on play one or two, I think they can still win 9-10 games with Mason as your starting quarterback," Kaboly explained.
Many people would agree with Kaboly's thoughts, as Rudolph has already proven to be a serviceable starter in Pittsburgh during his previous tenure with the Steelers. Rudolph had an excellent performance in the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as well, as the veteran completed 9/10 passes thrown for 84 yards, while throwing for a touchdown in the first quarter. Rudolph will continue playing throughout the preseason, as the young veteran will need to be ready to go at all times in 2025.

Rodgers will be the Steelers' starting quarterback in 2025 barring any injuries, but Rudolph's presence may prove to be extremely important at a later date this year. Rudolph was credited with 1,530 yards and nine touchdowns last season, while throwing nine interceptions as well. The former Titan is back in Pittsburgh following an underwhelming year in Tennessee, as Rudolph will open the 2025 season playing behind one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history.
Steelers' Mason Rudolph Expected To Take On Key Off-Field Role In 2025
Both Rudolph and Rodgers are expected to be excellent mentors towards the rookie Howard, as the first-year quarterback is expected to get an opportunity to prove himself at a later date. A sixth-round pick out of Ohio State, Howard is a promising player who is currently recovering from a broken hand he suffered recently in training camp.
Howard was a star in college, as the former Buckeye played a crucial role in Ohio State's National Championship run last season. Rudolph will be the perfect mentor for the young quarterback, as he has spent four seasons in Pittsburgh prior and will do an excellent job in helping Howard get comfortable. Howard is currently considered to be week-to-week, while Rudolph will continue making an impact throughout the preseason.

Rudolph has proven to have success playing in Pittsburgh in the past (especially at the end of the 2023 season). His number was called upon heavily by Head Coach Mike Tomlin during that time, starting the last three games of the season. This came after then starter Kenny Pickett was injured against the 2-10 Arizona Cardinals and did not see the field the rest of the season. Rudolph led the team to three straight victories and an AFC Wild Card berth.
With the start of the regular season continuing to get closer, fans can feel hopeful that if Rodgers happens to go down at any point during the 2025 campaign, Rudolph can step in and not miss a beat.
