The Pittsburgh Steelers made the aggressive decision to trade for, and then extend, DK Metcalf in the 2025 offseason. The wide receiver is one of the league's highest-paid at his position, and rightfully so. This move eventually led to the team moving on from George Pickens, and fans worried about who was going to step up into the second spot on the depth chart. Many hoped Calvin Austin III would be a formidable option in the receiving game, but he has not had many chances to prove himself after an abdominal injury occurred that has held him out of the majority of training camp.

There have been countless rumors about the Steelers potentially bringing in another pass-catcher to add to the group, and more fuel was added to that fire when it was reported that veteran wideout Gabe Davis would return to Pittsburgh for his second visit of the offseason. While the trip, which is expected to commence on Tuesday, does not mean he will be signing to play for the Steelers, it surely seems like the two sides want to get a deal done.
Another team has reportedly entered the sweepstakes, however. Pittsburgh could end up losing out on the ability to sign Davis because of an organization that he used to play for: the Buffalo Bills. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, the wide receiver is planning to make a trip to New York on Wednesday with the intention of speaking with the franchise that drafted him.

It's worth noting that the Steelers' brass had some issues with Davis' medicals the last time he was in the Steel City. If everything checks out when he visits on Tuesday, Pittsburgh's front office may not allow him to leave without putting pen to paper. This would end up finally putting a stop to all discussions regarding General Manager Omar Khan making one more splash trade. Signing Davis would officially fill a void and make the fan base feel much more comfortable with the positional group.

It is widely understood that the Steelers can't afford to take a step back on offense in 2025. The addition of Davis could only help a unit that has struggled in recent seasons. He has a respectable history in the NFL, and would act as a great option in keys situations and the red zone. It's possible that he is in the black and gold by the end of the day on Tuesday, but the Bills are lurking waiting to potentially make an addition of their own.
Davis may prefer to play for Buffalo because of familiarity and the team's prowess in the AFC. Many expect that the Bills could be hoisting a Lombardi Trophy in February, which could serve as an attractive recruiting piece. Pittsburgh does have a chance to be in the mix, but one of the biggest selling points would have to be targets, as Davis could prefer the Steelers if he believes he will be a top option in the passing game.
Steelers Must Actually Use Davis If He Is Signed For The 2025 Season
In 2024, Pittsburgh traded for Mike Williams at the trade deadline and barely used him. Aside from one big play against the Washington Commanders, he was barely involved with the offense. Despite it being very late in training camp, inking Davis to a deal must follow with him seeing a lot of playing time. It would be a shame to bring him in and not give him the opportunities to make a true difference for the team.
