The Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the New York Jets to begin the 2025 regular season on Sunday. It is a highly-anticipated contest because of the swap of teams that Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields went through during the offseason. It will be an exciting way for the year to begin, and fans in the Steel City will watch from afar as the organization will be on the road. There are a lot of storylines entering the matchup, so a lot of eyes will be on the game despite the fact that it is not a standalone, primetime event.

Steelers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks on with intense focus in street clothes as the team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

The trenches will be a crucial part of the game with a lot of eyes on Cam Heyward and his status. He is currently still hoping that the franchise will give him a new deal based on his 2024 performance. One individual that would have made things difficult for the Steelers was Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, he will no longer be suiting up for the Week 1 showdown, a crucial development as the team captain faces a potentially long-term issue.

No one is ever rooting for an injury, but it's safe to say that this is a beneficial one for the Steelers. Vera-Tucker is a former first-round pick that has plenty of experience. The interior of Pittsburgh's defense will be now be set to take advantage of an unfortunate injury that appears to have occurred quite recently. If Heyward does suit up, he could make a statement right off the bat.

It could go from bad to worse for the Jets and Vera-Tucker, as Adam Schefter added to Russini's post on social media, suggesting that the interior lineman may in fact need surgery.

Vera-Tucker has played in 43 games over the course of his four-year career, but has dealt with injuries in the past, competing in only seven games in 2022, and five in 2023. This is another potential issue that could affect New York's 2025 campaign. Fields certainly has a lot to lose with the injury, as potential quarterback draws up the middle will now be a little more difficult. He was placed on Injured Reserve in both the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, and that could be his fate in 2025, as well.

Steelers Will Look To Dominate The Trenches Throughout 2025 Season

Pittsburgh is a slight favorite in the game against New York. The injury to Vera-Tucker is a significant one, as it would be as if Isaac Seumalo couldn't play for the Steelers. For New York, the hope is that the veteran won't miss too much time, but Russini's reporting suggests that that it could be rather serious. Overall, as a big Week 1 contest nears, the Jets will be without, arguably, their best offensive lineman, and that could seriously affect the outcome for Head Coach Mike Tomlin and co.
