The Pittsburgh Steelers lost safety DeShon Elliott in their Week 1 victory over the New York Jets, and the team is still uncertain how long he will be sidelined. To address the gap in the secondary, the Steelers signed free agent safety Jabrill Peppers, bringing in a versatile player to help stabilize the defense while Elliott recovers. The move underscores the team’s urgency to improve a defense that struggled at times against the Jets.

Despite the shaky performance in Week 1, the Steelers are already focused on Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, aiming to tighten up coverage and limit big plays. Peppers’ addition gives the coaching staff more flexibility in the back end, allowing the defense to rotate personnel and scheme more effectively. His experience and versatility are expected to be key factors as the team looks to correct its early mistakes.

In the early stages of his Steelers career, Peppers has quickly made an impression on his teammates and the coaching staff. His ability to adapt to the defensive system and contribute immediately has provided a boost to the secondary. With Elliott out, Peppers’ presence could be a difference-maker as the Steelers look to build momentum and improve their performance heading into Week 2.

Steelers safety Juan Thornhill met with the Pittsburgh media to share an update on how Peppers has been adapting to the Steel City.

"He's doing well like just me knowing him from the past like he is a hitter, smart guy, he is picking up our defense well," Thornhill said while speaking to the Pittsburgh media on Thursday. "Sometimes it takes guys like maybe a week or something to adjust. It doesn't even seem like it's gonna take him that long."

Peppers played just six games with the New England Patriots in the 2024 season, but he still managed one interception, two passes deflected, and one forced fumble. Pro Football Focus rated him as a top-10 safety in football during those six starts.

Peppers is a physical, hard-hitting safety who should fit perfectly in Steel City, bringing the type of toughness and versatility the Steelers value. That is exactly why Thornhill is thrilled about him joining his defense.

"It just seems like he just knows what he is doing already," Thornhill said. "He is gonna fit in really well and help us out."

With Elliott sidelined, the Steelers have turned to Peppers to help shore up a defense that showed some cracks in Week 1. Peppers hasn’t played a full season in a while, but the flashes he showed with the Patriots last year prove he can make plays and bring a physical presence to the field. His versatility and ability to step into multiple roles immediately give the Steelers some much-needed flexibility in the secondary.

Steelers Likely To Give Jabrill Peppers Action Quickly

The team knows they can’t afford to wait for Elliott to return to get back on track. Week 2 against the Seahawks is already looming, and the Steelers will need everyone, especially Peppers, to be sharp from the first snap. Early reports from the locker room indicate he’s adjusting quickly and earning the respect of his teammates.

If Peppers can maintain that level of play, he could be the difference-maker the Steelers defense needs while Elliott recovers. It sounds like Peppers will be expected to play immediately in this defense and will be trusted to do so.
