The Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round 2025 NFL draft pick, Derrick Harmon, was selected to help this defense stop the run. The Steelers were quickly impressed with Harmon’s talent, athleticism, and football IQ, and they made it clear they wanted him in the lineup as soon as possible. His ability to read blocks, fill gaps, and make tackles near the line of scrimmage made him an instant asset to Pittsburgh’s defensive front.

During a preseason game, Harmon suffered an injury that forced him to be carted off the field, tears streaming down his face. Many feared the worst, worried that the promising rookie might miss significant time. Fortunately, Harmon recovered more quickly than expected and made his return in Week 3 against the New England Patriots. In that game, he not only showcased his ability to adapt to the NFL speed, but also recorded his first career sack, signaling that he could be a key contributor for the Steelers’ defense moving forward.

Steelers’ longstanding team captain Cam Heyward revealed he had one big worry about Harmon heading into his regular season debut, though he didn’t let it overshadow the rookie’s performance. Heyward admitted he was initially concerned about Harmon adjusting to the physicality and pace of NFL offenses, but was thrilled with how the young first-rounder handled himself on the field. Harmon’s poise, aggression, and playmaking ability left Heyward and the rest of the team confident that the Steelers had landed a cornerstone defender for years to come.
"I thought Derrick [Harmon] played very well," Heyward said while speaking to members of the Pittsburgh media on Monday. "He's got strong hands. I was worried about his conditioning, but he came to play today. I think it really balanced out our group, especially with [Isaiahh Loudermilk] going down. To get him back in the flow, and he's just gonna keep getting better -- it creates something we can build on."
For Harmon, it was exciting not only to get on the field, but also to make an immediate impact. He was clearly nervous, just like the Steelers' fan base, when he had to be carted off during the preseason game. Later in that same game, cameras caught him on the sideline in street clothes, being supported by Heyward and superstar pass rusher TJ Watt.

It was a powerful moment that showcased the Steelers’ veteran leaders rallying around a young rookie facing a very difficult experience in the NFL. Harmon later shared how it felt to record his first career sack, marking a special milestone in his debut season.
"I felt good," Harmon said. "I just have to keep stacking these and get better."
Harmon’s first game was a strong start to his rookie season. He will now look to carry that momentum on the road in Ireland for Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Steelers' Cam Heyward Should Have Big Advantage In Week 4
The Steelers will be facing the backup Vikings left guard, which could present an opportunity for Heyward to rack up sacks and generate plenty of pressure. That could also help Harmon find more freedom on the field.

The Steelers’ pass rush should have an advantage in Week 4, and they will be looking to make up for three struggling defensive showings with a strong effort in Dublin.
