The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2025 season as a supposed defensive juggernaut. Things can quickly change however, and Pittsburgh has struggled immensely on the defensive side of the ball over the first seven weeks of the 2025 season. The Steelers have allowed 30+ points in three out of six games played this year and the unit as a whole will need to be much better moving forward.

Steelers' Jalen Ramsey and other members of the defense celebrate after forcing a turnover during the 2025 season in Week 2.

The defense coughed up 33 points to the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday night. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was able to pick the Steelers apart with ease as he threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns throughout the contest. Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen took a moment to comment on Pittsburgh's defensive efforts against the Bengals, as the veteran claims the game was nothing short of a fluke performance. Queen said that sometimes bad games like that can happen and the unit will need to execute better in the future.

"I think it's the NFL," Queen stated. "Sometimes it happens when you don't want it to. Sometimes it's ugly, but at the end of the day, it's the NFL."

Queen continued to talk about everyone doing their job correctly, as the veteran linebacker believes improvement will stem from the coaching staff.

"They get paid to play, the coaches get paid to coach. We just got to fix our plays, we got to lock in and execute better, try not to let those things happen," Queen explained.

Queen is a six-year veteran that has split time with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh. He is an experienced player that can turn things around in an instant. The former Raven was unable to make a major impact against the Bengals on Thursday, but the Steelers will need him and the rest of the defensive unit to be at their best against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

The defense as a whole will be faced with an excellent test on Sunday. The Steelers will need to deny the Packers' run game to the best of their ability as Josh Jacobs is one of the more explosive backs in all of football. Pittsburgh will host Green Bay for the Steelers' first Sunday Night Football matchup of the season in what could very well develop into a high powered back and fourth matchup.

Steelers' Receive Major Backlash Following Poor Defensive Performance

The defensive unit in its entirety will need to play much better moving forward. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly voiced his frustration surrounding the defensive efforts following the game, as Kaboly appeared to be concerned with the lack of adjustments over the course of the matchup. The Bengals' offense outplayed the Steelers' defense in essentially every aspect on Thursday night and the unit will need to set the tone early against the Packers on Sunday.

Pittsburgh's lack of defensive adjustments were a serious concern in Cincinnati. Steelers Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin will need to mix things up against Green Bay as the Packers have a dynamic offensive with explosive weapons at every position. Queen and the rest of the Steelers' defense will look to have a bounce back performance on Sunday as Pittsburgh has an excellent opportunity to send a serious message to the rest of the league.

The Steelers' defense could be the most important aspect to success on Sunday night. The offense has been playing at a very high level as of late and Pittsburgh could solidify themselves as one of the best teams in football should the defense begin playing better. Queen and the defensive unit as a whole will look to get back on track against the Packers on Sunday and limiting Jacobs' role will be essential to victory.
