Steelers' Mike Tomlin Gives Honest Take On Huge Blown Call After Loss To Packers

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost on Sunday night as the team was dismantled by the Green Bay Packers. The final score was 35-25, but the game felt a lot further apart than that, especially in the second half. The defensive issues that fans have seen from the Steelers throughout the 2025 season were prevalent once again, and the offense struggled to move the ball as the group continued to get stuck behind the chains. It was a disappointing performance from a team that desperately needed to get back in the win column, and Pittsburgh failed to do that after its Week 8 matchup.

The loss to the Packers was a tale of two halves for the Steelers. The group went into halftime with a 16-7 lead, but Green Bay was able to come out of the half on fire, as it put up 28 points between two quarters to win the game. The Steelers had a chance to expand their lead as they got the ball out of the half, but the drive was cut short after Aaron Rodgers' pass fell incomplete on a third down.

On the play, a defender for the Packers clearly jumped offsides, but nothing was called and Rodgers was very animated on the field. Head Coach Mike Tomlin was asked about this during his postgame press conference, and whether or not he got any explanation from the officials.

"It's irrelevant." Tomlin said. "Because you can't get it back. I thought it was an error, but you can't get it back. Explanations mean very little."

The play ended up being very significant as it forced Pittsburgh to punt. The officials huddled together after the play after the uproar from the crowd and the Steelers sideline was showing a lot of anger, but the officials disbursed and announced that there was no penalty and it would be fourth down.

Pittsburgh was forced to punt the ball and give possession over to the Packers, and Green Bay then went on a nine-play, 90-yard touchdown drive to cut into the lead. The Steelers didn't hold onto the lead for much longer as the Packers eventually took control of the game and never gave it back.

This was a game-changing play, even though Pittsburgh did not play well throughout the rest of the game. If the Steelers could have continued that drive and gone down the field to put more points on the board, it may have changed the way that both teams played throughout the remainder of the contest.

Something like this needs to be able to be changed, even if the officials have to admit they made a mistake. It was a blatant call that was a clear penalty, yet the officials refused to admit they were wrong and make it right.

Steelers Had Penalty Woes Throughout Sunday Night Football Matchup

Tomlin usually takes pride in his team not being very penalized, but that was not the case on Sunday night. The Steelers had six accepted penalties for a total of 65 yards, with two of those penalties coming after the whistle. Those plus the blown call that should have gone against Green Bay essentially sealed Pittsburgh's fate in this game, along with the horrific play from the defense.

Many things need to change in Pittsburgh ahead of the team's Week 9 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. If they don't, Pittsburgh probably has little to no chance of taking down the team with the best record in the NFL.
