"Other Guys Gotta Get Open": Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Gives Receiving Corps Huge Wake-Up Call

The idea behind the Pittsburgh Steelers trading for DK Metcalf was to have a legitimate long-term top receiving option. Not too long after the move, General Manager Omar Khan sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 third-round pick. It was fair to wonder at the time who would step up into the second spot on the depth chart, but the issue more than halfway through the 2025 campaign is that it remains a mystery. Calvin Austin III has had his moments; however, no one individual has been able to step up on a consistent basis.

As the Steelers prepare for another AFC North battle in Week 11, it is set to come against the Cincinnati Bengals. While the rival has a stout offensive unit, the defense has allowed the most points per game throughout the NFL. It would be the perfect contest for several other pass-catchers to show that they belong as legitimate contributors in the Steel City.

Many players on the roster made themselves available to the media on Wednesday, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers stood in front of several reporters to discuss the Bengals' rematch. Someone had asked about what has to happen for Metcalf to get more involved. The receiver only hauled in three catches for 35 yards in Week 10, and it would be fair to assume that he could be getting frustrated. Rodgers directly blamed other options for not getting open.

"Other guys gotta get open and make plays," Rodgers said. "Because, you know, DK's a super talented guy, but we haven't been able to get him the targets that we want to because he's getting doubled every third down."

If other receivers prove to be consistent threats in the passing games, opposing defenses will be forced to respect their abilities. Currently, teams are not seemingly scared of the other pass-catchers breaking out of the Steelers' huddle. It's no accident that Pittsburgh's starting quarterback took specific aim at the offense. As a veteran and well-respected member in the locker room, his comments could be taken as motivating, rather than negative.

On the other hand. some may find it inappropriate for any signal-caller to send a message like that through the media. Sure, the wideouts and tight ends for the Steelers know they can do a better job, but sometimes, speaking your mind as Rodgers did works better behind closed doors. It also could be an the quarterback sending an encouraging message to Metcalf, specifically that he is not as fault for his up-and-down season.

It may be a good idea to have a better balanced attack offensively as well. The team only had 16 rushing attempts in Week 10, which made the play-calling a little more predictable. It's not easy to stay dedicated to the run when any given team is losing, but Pittsburgh's offense didn't put itself in a position to succeed versus the Los Angeles Chargers. Overall, it's clear that Rodgers truly believes there are not enough open receivers, particularly on third down.

Steelers Need More Consistent Offense For The Remainder Of The 2025 Season

Pittsburgh remains in first place in a wacky AFC North division, but the lead that the organization had has shriveled to just one game. The defense has been inconsistent, which is important to note, but the offense has only had one or two really encouraging outings throughout the first 10 weeks of the year. If contending in the postseason is even possible, the unit led by Rodgers will need to find a way to be more dynamic, and in the quarterback's words, get open more often.
