Pittsburgh Could Be In Trouble As The Ravens Are Looking To Steal One Of The Steelers' Top Head Coaching Candidates

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the many teams looking to fill a head-coaching vacancy. Pittsburgh has begun to conduct interviews with candidates after Mike Tomlin stepped down from his role with the organization, and some guys have been brought in for multiple interviews. The franchise is also interested in candidates that are still coaching, and those coaches are more difficult to interview due to them making their respective conference championship game. As of now, the Steelers have shown significant interest in former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver.

Weaver has been brought in twice by Pittsburgh, which shows the level of interest in the coach. He coached for three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before becoming the defensive coordinator in Miami ahead of the 2024 season. He has done a good job with a below average defensive roster, which is something that has caught the eye of a lot of teams with openings. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, there are a ton of openings in the NFL, and other spots seem to be more attractive for a first-time head coach. Baltimore has shown interest in Weaver, and he'd likely go there over Pittsburgh if the decision was up to him.

The coach is close with Baltimore. He played for the Ravens and he has also coached for the organization before as mentioned. He was with the franchise from 2021 through 2023, so he does have some relationships with players that are still on the roster. That, plus his history with the organization, might just be enough to make him choose the Ravens over any other coaching opportunity.

Pre-existing ties with Baltimore could make up Weaver's mind, as could the quarterback situation. Lamar Jackson has won two MVPs, and he is fairly consistently one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Having a franchise quarterback in place is a big obstacle for a lot of franchises and coaches, and Weaver would already have the most important position in the sport figured out if he were to land in Baltimore.

Pittsburgh has shown just as much interest in Weaver as Baltimore, but the franchise is at a disadvantage. The Steelers do not seem to be close to figuring out the quarterback position, and the franchise is not in an ideal spot when it comes to potentially drafting a quarterback near the top of the 2026 NFL Draft. The quarterback situation for the Steelers can go years without being solved, and it is hard to win as a new head coach without a solid plan at the position.

Weaver seems to have the mentality to coach in either Baltimore or Pittsburgh. The coach seems to be a hard-nosed, defensive-minded coach, and that is something that would fit in with either organization.

Steelers May Need To Pivot Towards An Offensive-Minded Head Coach

Historically the Steelers have hired defensive-minded head coaches, but this time around, the franchise should consider going in a different direction. Weaver could be good, but the league has shown in recent years that offensive-minded coaches typically have more success. The Steelers have been a slug offensively for years now, and getting a coach in the building that can innovate on offense is important.

The Steelers typically stick to their ways, and that would be true again if a defensive-minded coach is hired. The organization has been bringing in offensive-minded guys as well, which shows that decision makers might at least be open to going down a different path.
