The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of a very important offseason for the organization. Mike Tomlin stepping down essentially has allowed the franchise to hit the reset button when it comes to the coaching staff. The franchise is searching for a new head coach as well as new coordinators which will be chosen by whoever is hired as head coach. There are plenty of names that could be possible for the coordinator positions, but the landscape should become more clear as other coaches and coordinators are hired throughout the rest of the league.

The fan base in Pittsburgh probably won't get a clear idea on coordinators until a decision is made at head coach. New head coaches usually bring coordinators from their prior job, but a successful recipe for new head coaches has been hiring former NFL head coaches as coordinators. This could be something the Steelers look into as a name like Matt Nagy could be available as an offensive coordinator. He was getting head coaching looks, but if he doesn't get hired, he can look at offensive coordinator gigs. He was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2025 season, but the Chiefs are looking to fill his spot as he interviews elsewhere.

Nagy has been inteviewing for some head coaching vacancies around the league, and the Chiefs seem to be preparing for his departure by bringing in someone like Eric Bieniemy for an interview. Bieniemy served as the Chiefsβ offensive coordinator before, so he should expect to be hired due to his familiarity with the franchise and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

It doesn't look like Kansas City is going to be an option for Nagy. He is a finalist for the Tennessee Titans and their head coaching vacancy, but there is a chance he doesn't land a head coaching job during this cycle. This could leave him out of work for the 2026 season, which would have him searching for an opening as an offensive coordinator. Pittsburgh would be an option, but a lot of things would have to do with who is hired as the head coach as mentioned.
Nagy has been in Kansas City for a lot of his career. He was there from 2013 through 2017, but he then took the job as the Chicago Bearsβ head coach. He was there for four seasons and then returned to the Chiefs. Now the cycle has run its course and he is a name to watch to become a head coach again.
Nagy is a play-caller that has had a ton of success as a coordinator, and he would be coming from a winning franchise, despite the fact that the 2025 season did not go the Chiefs' way. This would seemingly be a good hire, especially if an inexperienced head coach is brought in.

Steelers Could Use Matt Nagy's Experience And Skills As A Play-Caller
Nagy has learned from Andy Reid for quite some time, and Reid is widely regarded as one of the best play designers and play-callers in the league. He has always been innovative and creative, and he does a good job adapting as things change in the NFL. That is something the Steelers have been missing, and Nagy could bring that into the fold in Pittsburgh.
Nagy is still looking for a head coaching job, but there is always a chance he doesn't get one. Kansas City is already preparing to replace him, which could drive him to the Black and Gold during the 2026 offseason.
