The Pittsburgh Steelers have already had a huge offseason that has been full of change. Former Head Coach Mike Tomlin stepped down following the 2025 campaign which put the franchise in its first head coaching search in nearly 20 years. It was announced on Saturday that the decision was made to hire former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy. The hire has not been popular amongst the fan base, but it might be a step in the right direction due to his offensive mindset, which is not usually what the organization looks for in a head coach.

McCarthy was just hired on Saturday, but fans will be watching to see who he brings in around him. The coaching staff that was in Pittsburgh during the 2025 season was told by General Manager Omar Khan that it would not be retained after Tomlin stepped down, but McCarthy can choose to bring back some of those coaches if he wants to.
However, the new head coach will likely look to bring some people he has worked with in the past to Pittsburgh to be his coordinators and assistant coaches. One of those names happens to be Luke Getsy.
Luke Getsy????

Getsy worked under McCarthy in Green Bay for four seasons and he eventually went on to be offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears for two seasons. He also worked as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2024 campaign. He was fired just nine games into the season in 2024, but it was a hard job for him due to how weak the Raiders were from a talent standpoint on that side of the ball.

Getsy has Pennsylvania roots and he played college football at Pittsburgh, and those roots are typically valued by the Steelers and McCarthy. This makes it seem likely that he could end up on McCarthy's staff, potentially as the offensive coordinator. This would not be a great move as Getsy's offenses have never put up great numbers with him as the coordinator, however it is important to note that he was not working with a ton of talent.
Justin Fields was his quarterback in Chicago, while the Raiders were an all-around dumpster fire in 2024. The coach has never necessarily had great quarterback play while he was the coordinator. Fields had the best season of his career in 2022 under Getsy, but that success mostly came on the ground. The lack of success with below-average quarterbacks is concerning due to the situation at the position in Pittsburgh.
Getsy has worked with Green Bay ever since being fired by Las Vegas in 2024. He was a defensive consultant during the 2024 season, and he served as a senior assistant in 2025. He could come to Pittsburgh in a position similar to those, or McCarthy could give him a serious look at offensive coordinator.

Steelers Fans Do Not Need To Put As Much Stock Into Offensive Coordinator Hire
While hiring Getsy as offensive coordinator might not be the best move, it shouldn't be a move that would be too consequential. McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach, so the team will be running his system. An offensive coordinator in a situation like that helps with scouting, game planning, player relations, and the approach on game day. McCarthy will likely be calling the plays throughout the game, which would be coming from his system.
Hiring Getsy would not be inspiring, but he has also never coached an offense with a ton of talent. That can be said about the group in Pittsburgh, but it is safe to say the franchise now has a reliable offensive line, a good running back, a solid tight end group, and a good wide receiver. The group can be successful, it just needs an answer at quarterback.
