The Pittsburgh Steelers’ fourth head coach since 1969, Mike McCarthy, is in the process of filling out his coaching staff, and the early returns have been both exciting and eye opening. Since getting to work in the Steel City, McCarthy has already made several notable additions that help paint a picture of how he plans to build this team. His long tenure in the NFL dating back to 1993 makes him a strong hire, as he brings decades of experience along with a deep network of connections across the league.

It is becoming increasingly clear what direction McCarthy wants to take with his staff. Familiarity appears to be a major priority, and that has shown in the couple of hires already made and the candidates he is reportedly interested in interviewing. McCarthy wants coaches he trusts, individuals who understand his philosophy and standards and can contribute immediately. While that approach brings optimism, there are still plenty of question marks remaining as the staff continues to come together.

On Thursday afternoon, additional information surfaced regarding another potential addition. According to Steelers insider Gerry Dulac, McCarthy has his eyes on former New Orleans Saints guard Jahri Evans.

"SOURCES: Former Saints G Jahri Evans is among the candidates to join Mike McCarthy's staff with the Steelers," Dulac said. "Evans, one of 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026, has been an offensive assistant and assistant OL coach the past three years in New Orleans."

Evans, a six time Pro Bowler and one of the most respected interior offensive linemen of his era, would bring valuable perspective and credibility to the coaching staff. His possible addition further highlights McCarthy’s emphasis on physicality, leadership, and winning in the trenches, principles that align closely with the Steelers’ long standing identity.

As the staff continues to take shape, the blend of experience and familiarity could play a key role in shaping Pittsburgh’s next chapter. Of course this doesn't fully mean Evans is going to end up on the Steelers staff. However, it's an exciting update considering how great Evans was as a player, and the experience he has been building as a coach.

Steelers Staff Is Going To Grow Under Mike McCarthy

For Steelers fans who were not thrilled with the McCarthy hire, there is a silver lining. Many Steelers pundits expect the coaching staff to grow in 2026 and beyond with a new head coach in place, and that appears to be happening.

The Steelers had the smallest and least expensive coaching staff in the league in 2025, so an expanded staff would represent a meaningful shift for the organization.
