Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Issues Huge Warning Ahead Of 2026 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making plans for their approach to the 2026 NFL Draft as we speak. There are plenty of options they can consider, knowing that the team has a large amount of holes that need to be fixed before next season kicks off. Among all the plans they're making, one of them will undoubtedly be at the quarterback position. The franchise has plenty of time and options with which to figure out the issue at the position. However, even with all the uncertainty surrounding the Steelers at quarterback right now, there is a course of action they have been warned to not take.

With all of the people giving advice to the Black and Gold on which quarterback to sign or draft, a new voice has chimed in, urging the Steelers to avoid making a major mistake regarding a potential quarterback move. On the latest episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger chimed in on how he felt the Steelers should approach the quarterback position.

"It seems like, again, I'm still, I'm still, very, very strongly going against getting a quarterback in the first round," Roethlisberger said. "I wouldn't even get one in the second round, personally. If you've got those third-rounds and you're not gonna do something with them, if you wanna try and grab someone in the third round you really like, maybe there? I wouldn't package my third-rounders to move up to get a second-round quarterback. I would not mess with a quarterback this draft. Unless, again, you wanna just stack one of the late third- or fourth-rounds. Just someone to compete to have extra bodies, one of those whatevers, you know?"

Roethlisberger's comments on not drafting a quarterback this draft make a lot of sense. In last year's event, the team took quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round, and many are clamoring for Howard to get his chance to be the starting quarterback. Regardless of whether or not veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns or not, the Steelers can't afford to acquire yet another quarterback in a crowded room full of uncertainty.

Regarding Roethlisberger's comment on having extra bodies, the Steelers could potentially be looking elsewhere to find competition for the quarterback room, but doing so early through the draft could prove to be a colossal mistake. There have been plenty of reports of the Steelers liking certain quarterback prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, and with the Steelers not having heard from Rodgers on his plans yet officially, anything is possible right now.

However, Roethlisberger's point stands firm. If the Steelers want to go out and find a quarterback for competition sake, they would need to do so at the least amount of cost. A late-round draft pick, as Roethlisberger said, would be a suitable time to draft one. As long as this quarterback serves the purpose of ensuring depth at a critical position, then it seems as if Roethlisberger would be okay with drafting one then.

No matter what the team chooses to do at quarterback, they need to heed Roethlisberger's words.

Steelers Definitely Need To Spend Early Draft Picks On Skill Position Players

No matter who the Steelers choose to designate the starting quarterback for the 2026 NFL season, they need to support them to the best of their ability. Their first few picks through the first three round picks would be best served by taking anyone who can help bolster the offense. The Steelers' offense was horribly inconsistent last season, and nailing the 2026 NFL Draft in the first three rounds on offensive skill players will go a long way to fixing this. Look for the Steelers to address wide receiver, interior offensive line, and possibly quarterback.
