Steelers' AFC Foe Completely Messes Up Omar Khan's Chance To Secure Blockbuster Trade

Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers have been living under a rock if they have not heard about the team's desperate need for help at the wide receiver position. It has consistently been said that the franchise needs to find a running mate for DK Metcalf, and the 2026 offseason will be the perfect time to address that. Free agency and the NFL Draft are two options to fix the area; however, the trade market is also something that the Steel City has become accustomed to under General Manager Omar Khan, who is not at all afraid to make a splash if it makes sense.

It truly is not known what Khan will decide to do. Theoretically, he could pursue wide receivers via all three avenues. A trade or free-agent signing can pretty much come at any time once the new league year begins, and then the 2026 NFL Draft is expected to be stacked with pass-catchers. Names like Brian Thomas Jr. and AJ Brown have been thrown out there, but acquiring one of the talented playmakers just got way harder.

On Thursday, the Chicago Bears decided to offload veteran wideout DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills. It was a deal that made sense for both sides from a logistical standpoint, but Bills General Manager Brandon Beane was very aggressive. Moore, who is 28, isn't necessarily regarded as one of the best at his position anymore; however, it took a second-round selection to acquire him.

It's safe to say that trading a second-round pick for Moore can be looked at as a bit too much, even if Buffalo received a fifth-rounder in return. This immediately reset the wide receiver trade market. If Khan were to have been thinking about a blockbuster move, such as making a deal for Thomas — who is just 23 years of age — it just got so much more difficult.

There doesn't seem to be a way for the Steelers to get a top-end pass-catcher unless a first-rounder is sent back to the team that Khan is doing business with. At that point, Pittsburgh has to weigh the pros and cons. Is Thomas established and young enough to justify passing on one of the top wide receivers in the upcoming draft class? For context, Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon and Jordyn Tyson are all 21, just two years younger than Thomas.

Moore also has a legitimate contract that he is tied up in, so the fact that the Bills were willing to give up a second, as well as absorb a significant cap hit, speaks volumes. Khan won't get anywhere close to some of the top potential trade candidates on the market without talking about the 21st overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, just like free agency, certain transactions sometimes have the negative effect of completely changing the market for something. In this case, the Bears and Bills deal that was verbally agreed upon involving Moore most definitely has general managers thinking twice about inquiring about a player such as Thomas or Brown. It certainly won't help if Khan wants to offer a second for a specific player and the front office that he is talking to points directly to the Moore trade.

Steelers Could Find The Help That They Need In Free Agency

Three names to keep an eye on are Mike Evans, Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs. All of them are going to be in high demand once the legal tampering period begins on Monday, but Pittsburgh has plenty of cap space to get aggressive if need be. The Bills and Bears deal could have ended the hopes of acquiring a top-notch receiver; however, free agency is fair game and Khan has plenty to work with.
