Report: Steelers Reuniting Mike McCarthy With Offensive Lineman As Pittsburgh Finally Addresses Big Concern (Updated)

It's fair to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the more active NFL teams since the league tampering period began on Monday. General Manager Omar Khan has used all different kinds of avenues to better the roster, and he also retained some important internal free agents. The front office has not disappointed early on in the first offseason since 2006 for the organization without Mike Tomlin around as the franchise's head coach. There is still work to be done, which is why fans have been intently watching to see what move could potentially come next in the Steel City.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan stands on the field with his arms folded as he looks out into the distance while the team gets set to play in a professional football contest.

One spot where the Steelers need some help is on the interior offensive line. Isaac Seumalo is expected to leave the Steel City in free agency after agreeing to terms with the Arizona Cardinals on a three-year deal. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Steelers are expected to sign Brock Hoffman, who is capable of playing multiple positions. He played for Mike McCarthy for several years when both were with the Dallas Cowboys

However his initial reporting is now officially being refuted.

"Sources: The #Steelers are signing former #Cowboys C/G Brock Hoffman to a 1-year, $2.5M deal — reuniting with HC Mike McCarthy," Schultz wrote in a now deleted social media post. "The 26-year-old Hoffman started 14 games over the last two years, proving to be a valuable depth piece at C and both G spots."

This news came just after the shocking development of the Baltimore Ravens backing out of the Maxx Crosby trade, but apparently Khan continued to work with the goal of solidifying his own roster without any drama. It would be a modest deal and could be looked at as a depth signing, but it would give the Steelers options overall moving forward. Hoffman has played center throughout his professional career; however, Zach Frazier has that spot all locked up in the Steel City.

Team reporter Mike DeFabo from The Athletic reported that there is no deal in place yet, but that does not mean that it won't get done in the near future if the two sides are close.

This would end up being a very sneaky, low-risk, high-reward move that presents the Steelers with plenty of options. Hoffman would be viewed as simply solid depth, and would be a bonus that he is familiar with McCarthy.

Additionally, he could also surprise the coaching staff in training camp and prove that he deserves to be one of the best signings of the offseason. The left guard spot is wide open, and there's no reason currently to believe that Hoffman won't be given a chance to prove himself... If he ends up signing to play for the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Former Cowboys offensive guard Brock Hoffman looks on before a game in the 2025 NFL season.

Reaction of the report quickly came after Schultz posted on social media what would have been expected to be finalized on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. It was being well received by plenty of team beat writers.

Khan is going to continue to make the subtle, but necessary moves to build out Pittsburgh's depth chart. Hoffman would serve as a backup to Frazier, but could also compete for the starting left guard spot depending on how the rest of the offseason goes. The front office is slowly picking apart the holes that the roster was expected to have once the 2025 campaign ended. Fans will wait to hear if this deal actually comes to fruition.

Steelers Setting Up To Have Plenty Of Options In 2026 NFL Draft

It was originally expected that Pittsburgh would be without a doubt taking a receiver in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Now, after addressing the pressing need for the second spot on the depth chart following the trade for Michael Pittman Jr., Khan has options. The recent moves suggest that the organization is looking to have flexibility when it is put on the clock.

Free agency is still in full swing and fans of the Steelers should expect for Khan to continue operating in a strategic manner. There are certainly more moves to come, whether it be via re-signing internal free agents, bringing in external ones, or looking into the trade market a little bit more.
