Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Challenged Pittsburgh Off The Field, Setting A New Locker Room Precedent

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving through the 2026 offseason with many of the same questions they have faced over the last few years. The primary question being how will the quarterback room shake out by the time the regular season arrives? A good portion of Steeler Nation has struggled to believe the answer to that question was the correct one, but that quarterback room has a chance to remain the same in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Ben Roethlisberger was still leading the offense.

Steelers quarterbacks Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Aaron Rodgers warm up prior to Pittsburgh's 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11 of the 2025 NFL Regular Season.

The quarterback room remaining the same would entail Aaron Rodgers coming back for his 22nd NFL season, as well as having Mason Rudolph and Will Howard remain the two backups.

Rodgers isn't necessarily the unanimous top choice for the Steelers heading into 2026, but he is the most likely option at this point. Despite his age, Rodgers still is able to be a significant contributor to the offense, and that extends both on and off the field.

There have been many reports about how players loved having Rodgers in the locker room and how he was a big positive to the overall team. Many players have even supported Rodgers publicly and want to have him back for the 2026 season.

In a recent episode of The Justin Time Podcast, the previously mentioned Rudolph made an appearance and discussed his experiences throughout his six seasons with the Steelers, and some of that included his experience working with Rodgers this past season.

"He would pop quiz the room," said Rudolph on Rodgers during film sessions. "Hey Roman Wilson. Hey DK [Metcalf]. Hey Scotty Miller, Calvin Austin. What did you think about the starting cornerback on the left side this week? Does he travel with the #1 receiver or does he stay put? What are their top 3 coverages you've seen so far out of nickel defense, out of base defense?"

Rodgers asking his fellow teammates about particular details of the opposing defense throughout the week is something that might not shock many, but his approach to challenging guys to take it to the next level and set a new precedent is great to hear from Rudolph.

"He wouldn't rake you over the coals if you got the wrong answer that early in the week," said Rudolph. "But he sort of set the precedent where he wanted guys to start watching tape on their own. Even at the professional level, you assume guys are doing that, and they are, but he just wanted to challenge them to go a level deeper."

Getting any advantage you can over your opponent in the NFL is never easy, but it is clear from Rudolph's comments on how Rodgers approaches the game that if there is something to be found to give his team a leg up, he will find it.

The film sessions both inside the outside the building are obviously a huge part of how a quarterback is able to process information so quickly during such a fast paced game. Getting the rest of your team to process the game at that speed, as well as setting new standards for them to continue that mindset moving forward, is a huge advantage of bringing in someone like Rodgers last season.

Steelers Still Appear To Be Waiting On An Aaron Rodgers Decision... Again

While the Steelers have started the 2026 offseason hot, just like they did in 2025, they still have the same big problem of not having an answer, at least publicly, of who their starting quarterback will be for the upcoming season. Many assume they know the answer to that, but it is likely only a small group actually know.

Rodgers appears to be operating on his own timeline yet again, but there is a chance that the primary people that need to know his intentions, General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike McCarthy, are in the know on when and/or what his intentions are. It is yet another waiting game, that many around the Steelers' fan base are frustrated with playing.
