The Pittsburgh Steelers have stayed busy throughout the 2026 offseason, making several moves aimed at helping the roster improve heading into the 2026 campaign. One of the biggest early moves was trading for wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts, giving the offense a reliable second option to pair with DK Metcalf. For a while, Pittsburgh had been looking for more consistency at wide receiver behind Metcalf. Now, the hope is that Pittman can help fill that gap and give the passing game another dependable weapon.

A lot of the credit for the aggressive offseason approach has gone to General Manager Omar Khan. Since taking over the front office, Khan has built a reputation for being willing to make moves when opportunities present themselves, and this offseason has been another example of that mindset. The trade for Pittman grabbed plenty of headlines, but it wasn’t the only move Pittsburgh made.
The Steelers also added several notable free agents, including running back Rico Dowdle, cornerback Jamel Dean, and safety Jaquan Brisker — to name a few. Many fans have reacted positively to the flurry of moves, and the national media has taken notice as well.
One person who had strong praise for Khan was NFL insider James Palmer. While appearing on the 89 Podcast with Steve Smith Sr., Palmer spoke about the Steelers’ decision to trade for Pittman and why he believes it was a smart move.
“In an instance where they read the room really really well. I think Omar Khan made a very smart move to go and just swap a sixth round compensatory pick and you get yourself Michael Pittman Jr.," Palmer said. "I believe he’s a much better fit in Pittsburgh if Aaron Rodgers is there than his previous place. I think he plays the way Aaron would want a receiver to play.”
A lot of the conversation around Pittsburgh’s offense still circles back to the quarterback situation. Aaron Rodgers has not yet made a final decision on whether he plans to return to the Steelers for the 2026 season. His future remains one of the biggest storylines surrounding the team as the offseason continues.

If Rodgers does decide to come back, the addition of Pittman could end up looking even better. Rodgers has always preferred receivers who run precise routes, understand coverages, and can be trusted to be in the right place at the right time. Pittman has built a reputation as a smart and dependable receiver, which is likely why Palmer believes the two could work well together.
If Rodgers returns, he would step into an offense that suddenly looks deeper at wide receiver than it has in years. With Metcalf stretching the field and Pittman working the middle and intermediate areas, Pittsburgh could have a passing attack that defenses will have a much harder time slowing down.
There are still plenty of questions to answer before the 2026 season begins, but the Steelers have clearly made it a priority to improve the roster. Moves like trading for Pittman show that the front office is willing to be aggressive when it sees a chance to make the team better. If the new additions perform the way Pittsburgh hopes, this offseason could end up being a big turning point for the offense.

Steelers Could Still Select Wide Receiver 21st Overall Next Month
Even after trading for Pittman, the Steelers could still look toward the wide receiver position in the first round of April’s draft. While Pittman gives Pittsburgh a reliable number two option next to Metcalf, the depth behind them still leaves some questions. One of the biggest reasons for that is the loss of Calvin Austin III in free agency.
Austin’s speed and ability to stretch the field gave the offense a different element, and replacing that skill set will not be easy. Drafting a receiver in the first round could help fill that gap while also giving the Steelers a long-term playmaker to develop. Adding a young receiver would allow Pittsburgh to build more depth at the position and give the offense another weapon for the future.
