The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation remains the greatest topic of mystery heading into the 2026 NFL season, especially with Mike McCarthy taking over as head coach. Everyone is curious about what McCarthy and General Manager Omar Khan will do with the team’s abundance of draft capital in the 2026 NFL Draft. Naturally, many are wondering which quarterback the Steelers might select, but once again, this QB class is relatively weak.

The Steelers certainly need a younger potential future at the franchise quarterback position, but few analysts believe the answer will come from this draft group. That’s why a return from Aaron Rodgers is such a hopeful scenario for Pittsburgh. Rodgers, if healthy and committed, could serve as the team’s starter for the 2026 season while giving the organization time to develop a long-term plan for the position.
Will Howard, meanwhile, has earned a lot of respect from McCarthy and the coaching staff. Pittsburgh sees him as a promising talent but wants to ensure he is eased carefully into any meaningful NFL action. The team is committed to developing him without rushing him into a high-pressure starting role, which could be critical for his long-term success. Then there’s Mason Rudolph, who is considered a reliable backup, but offers little beyond that. This raises a natural question for fans: if the Steelers are so invested in Howard’s development, why haven’t they traded Rudolph to make room for the young quarterback?
On Monday, Steelers insider Brian Batko shed some light on the situation. In a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette chat, Batko hinted at the reasons why the Steelers likely have never been able to execute a trade involving Rudolph.
"Trading Mason Rudolph might be the most unlikely, simply because we have years worth of a sample size that the Steelers have been unable to do that," Batko said.
While he didn’t reveal specific details, his comments suggest that teams around the league may view Rudolph’s value as limited, making it difficult for Pittsburgh to find a deal that meets their standards. Additionally, the Steelers may see Rudolph’s presence as valuable insurance, especially if Rodgers’ return or Howard’s progression faces unexpected setbacks.

Perhaps the most eye-opening part of what Batko said was the Steelers "have been unable to do that." What exactly does that mean? It has led fans to speculate. Have the Steelers been exploring trades for Rudolph in the past, but simply have not been able to find a partner? The league is quarterback-hungry, and Rudolph has not exactly proven himself as a reliable starter, especially outside of Pittsburgh, so the market for him may simply be weak. That appears to be exactly what Batko is suggesting, and it is a telling revelation for Steelers fans to hear.
Steelers Quarterback Situation Continues To Remain Unsolved
In short, the Steelers’ quarterback situation is a careful balancing act. With Rodgers potentially returning, Howard being nurtured for future success, and Rudolph remaining a dependable backup, Pittsburgh is trying to navigate the 2026 season without rushing any decisions. As McCarthy and Khan prepare for the draft and the months ahead, fans will be watching closely, eager to see how the team manages its most important position.

The Steelers have faith that Howard could eventually develop into a reliable starter. While that may be a long shot for a sixth-round pick, Howard could be the outlier. Even if he only becomes a dependable backup, that would still be a win for the team. The Steelers still need to solve the quarterback situation, and obviously, if Rodgers makes it clear that he will play in 2026 for the Black and Gold, that changes things significantly.
