The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a new coaching regime as nearly the entire staff was turned over after the 2025 season. Former Head Coach Mike Tomlin announced that he would be stepping down the day after his team was eliminated from the postseason, and the organization then embarked on a thorough coaching search that resulted in the hiring of Mike McCarthy. The hiring was not very popular at first, but McCarthy has built out a strong coaching staff and there is some optimism surrounding the team after some key offseason additions through free agency.

Some fans were worried after Tomlin stepped down that some key veterans and leaders on the roster might not have any interest in playing for a new head coach. The main worry surrounded players like TJ Watt and Cam Heyward, but both players seem to be bought into what Pittsburgh is doing. The two defenders are nearing the end of their careers, and both are desperate to have postseason success and eventually reach the goal of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. McCarthy sat down with Max Starks in a recent interview for the team, and he was asked about how important it is to connect with two leaders like Watt and Heyward.
"I mean, it's very important," McCarthy said. "The Pittsburgh Steelers have an incredible history and tradition. We're all aware of that. But also, it has a history of winning currently. TJ and Cam are part of that. I had early conversations with both men. They just want a chance to win it all before their career comes to an end. So very receptive. They want to be part of the messaging, the new direction. Basically both said, 'Hey Coach, just tell us what you want.'"
Heyward has been supportive of the hiring of McCarthy on his podcast, while not much has been heard from Watt. Neither of them were at McCarthy's introductory press conference, which sparked a decent amount of pointless concern from the fan base. These comments from the coach confirm that the defensive duo is locked into the new direction of the team.

Watt and Heyward share the same goal, as the lack of postseason success in Pittsburgh as of late has been well documented. Heyward had some playoff success earlier in his career, but Watt has never been part of a victory in the playoffs. The two want that to change in 2026, and maybe McCarthy and his staff can help accomplish that.
It doesn't sound like a lot is going to change with the defense in Pittsburgh. McCarthy has been adamant in stating that he wants to continue using the same system while making some slight adjustments. This could be concerning to some fans as the defense has underperformed considerably over the last few seasons, but hopefully the slight adjustments will help the unit perform better in 2026.
Steelers Need TJ Watt To Return To His Old Form
Watt was still a game-wrecker during the 2025 season, but he didn't produce nearly as much as he is used to from a sack perspective. It is important to note that he gets chipped and double-teamed more than any other defender in the league outside of Myles Garrett, but it would still be nice to see him get to the quarterback more often. He had just seven sacks in 2025, although he did force three fumbles and picked off two passes.

He has always been productive outside of just the sack statistic, but getting him back to being a double-digit sack guy is going to be critical when it comes to the defense's overall success.
What do you think about McCarthy's conversation with Watt and Heyward? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
