The Pittsburgh Steelers were a part of some of the biggest headlines of the NFL offseason, as former head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step down from his role after the 2025 season came to a close. Tomlin walked away the day after his team was eliminated from the postseason, and the front office embarked on a search for the franchise's next head coach almost immediately. Eventually, the organization landed on Mike McCarthy, who happens to be a native of Pittsburgh. The hire was not very popular at first, but the fan base seems to be coming around after some offseason additions and the coaching staff being built out.

The players have not been around McCarthy much since he was hired. There were a handful of guys that showed up to his introductory press conference, but other than that, there has not been much public interaction. That remains the case, however the players were in the building this week for Phase One of voluntary offseason workouts. Some players spoke to the media, and running back Jaylen Warren went on Good Morning Football on Friday morning where he was asked about his new coach.
"Man, he's been energetic," Warren said. "Just getting us, obviously, it's an information week, so he's been doing his thing as far as preparing us for what he wants and what he is expecting out of us. It's been great. I just love the energy he brings, I just love what he's about."
A lot of the players that have shown up to offseason workouts are just now meeting their head coach for the first time, so there is going to be an adjustment period. Warren explained the head coach was still ironing out expectations, which is completely normal considering the massive shift this coaching change has been on the organization.

Warren is probably a little bit excited about having McCarthy in the building as his head coach. McCarthy is an offensive-minded head coach that loves to set the tone by running the football, which fits right into Warren's playstyle. The Steelers also brought in Rico Dowdle during free agency to join Warren in the backfield, and Dowdle and McCarthy have history as the two were together with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 through 2024.
It is hard to predict how McCarthy is going to deploy his running backs, and that is something that fans will probably get more clarity on once training camp rolls around. Somewhat of a 50/50 split should be expected. However, Warren certainly has the edge when it comes to pass protection in obvious passing situations.
Kaleb Johnson is also in that running back room, but he should be expected to contribute on special teams while also seeing limited opportunities on offense. This coaching change was probably very beneficial to a player like Johnson, as he now gets a fresh start after being in the doghouse for most of his rookie season in 2025.

Steelers' Mike McCarthy's Energy And Dedication Is Undeniable
McCarthy is from Pittsburgh, so this is certainly a dream job for the head coach. It is the third historical franchise he has coached after Dallas and the Green Bay Packers, which is quite the impressive resume. He showed during his introductory press conference just how important this job is to him as he fought to hold tears of happiness back. That kind of energy and dedication should transfer over to the players and motivate them to play great for their head coach, which could be great for Pittsburgh. There should still be some grace given once the season begins as things probably won't go great right away, but there is a chance that McCarthy winds up being the right hire for the Steelers.
