The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to have potentially the most options of any team when the 2026 NFL Draft begins. Everyone is aware that the event is being hosted in the Steel City, and that the organization currently possesses 12 overall selections. General Manager Omar Khan could use some to move up in any given round; however, the front office might also try to deal away a pick or two in order to gain capital for 2027. There's also the possibility of the franchise adding a dozen rookies, but that seems like it would be a waste based on how hard it would be for all of them to make the 53-man roster.

The Steelers had a solid free agency period that has led to them not having to force a square peg into a round hole. In other words, Pittsburgh won't be tied down to taking specific positions in the early rounds. This gives Khan and co. flexibility and creative options to make the team better now, while also planning for the immediate future.

The organization holds the 21st overall selection. It is likely that either a wide receiver, safety or offensive lineman that the Steelers like ends up falling to that spot. In that case, the franchise might not even need to explore a trade up. When it could get interesting is when the second round approaches. The class of prospects is rather top heavy, meaning the bulk of the value will come within the top 50 to 60 picks or so.

Mike DeFabo of The Athletic ran throughout plenty of scenarios for Pittsburgh on Tuesday morning. He used evaluations and a point system for selections and then hypothetically presented possible options for Khan. According to the beat writer, the Steelers certainly have the ammo to skyrocket up the board early in round two if a certain player they love is falling.

"If the Steelers want to move up to the beginning of the second round, the Las Vegas Raiders could be a decent team to target in a trade," DeFabo noted. "The Raiders hold the fourth pick of the second round, No. 36, and could be interested in adding picks as they rebuild around quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Pick No. 36 is worth 166 points. To move up in the second round from 53 to 36, the Steelers might be able to bridge the gap with the third-round pick from the Pickens trade (No. 76, 61 points)."

While this would be pricey, it could make sense if the right prospect is sitting there and available. This might be the perfect time for Pittsburgh to target a wide receiver, especially if the first-round pick ends up playing a different position. The Las Vegas Raiders are in rebuilding mode and the accumulation of several selections would be viewed as a wise move made by General Manager John Spytek.

This scenario doesn't just allow the Steelers to land a big-time playmaker; it shows that Khan strategically added mid-round picks to get someone who was likely a first-round grade that fell out of the round. Sending that much capital to a team like the Raiders would send a strong message that the Steelers truly believe the opportunity to take a specific player couldn't have been passed up.

Khan is likely to try and pull something off once the big event comes to the Steel City, and no one should be surprised if a combination of the team's third and fourth-round selections are utilized to manufacture something exciting.

Steelers Won't Be Desperate To Make A Big Move

While Pittsburgh will have the potential to do so, it makes no sense to accept less in any trade that occurs just to move on from the 12 total picks that the organization possesses. Teams are going to be calling, and Khan has already made it pretty clear that it isn't very realistic to utilize all of the capital at his disposal. What the franchises uses and how trades come together, though, remains a mystery.
