Steelers Aren’t In The Clear As Key Front Office Member Could Depart

The Pittsburgh Steelers are typically known as one of the most well-run organizations in all of professional sports, although that reputation may have taken a hit after the fiasco that occurred on the first night of the 2026 NFL Draft. General Manager Omar Khan has done a good job since taking over the role before the 2022 season, but it is also important to give credit to Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl. Weidl has a knack for scouting, and he is one of the people in charge of putting Pittsburgh's big board together before every draft, and he plays a huge role in the process.

Weidl has done some great work for some great franchises throughout his career. He was a part of the Baltimore Ravens when they won the Super Bowl near the start of the 2010s, and he is also partially responsible for the semi-dominant run the Philadelphia Eagles have been on. Now, he is working on retooling the Steelers, and his name should be coveted by organizations that have had openings at general manager. He interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons vacancy earlier in the 2026 offseason, but the job went to Ian Cunningham.

Weidl has some interest every offseason, and despite the fact that he did not get the job in Atlanta, he could still be leaving the Steelers. The Minnesota Vikings have yet to hire a new general manager, and the organization is about to embark on a search for the next guy to fill the role. Beat writer Alec Lewis broke down the options in an article for The Athletic, and he named Weidl.

"Earlier this spring, Weidl interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons’ opening," Lewis wrote. "He has vast scouting experience. He started with the Ravens, was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles and found his way to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Pittsburgh, he heads up a hefty chunk of the team’s college scouting operation. Weidl has worked with a variety of coaches and evaluated players for several types of schemes. Being malleable to the coaches’ preferences would help his transition."

Lewis mentioned that Weidl's scouting background is intriguing, but he would have to be able to work with Head Coach Kevin O'Connell when it comes to his preferences. Weidl has not spoken publicly about potentially getting a job as a general manager, so it is unclear if that is something that he would be open to. There are always interesting power dynamics between head coaches and general managers. Sometimes both are hired at the same time, which has to make things easier. When they are hired at such different times, there can certainly be some gray area.

This all began when the Vikings fired their former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah back at the end of January. This came as a surprise as Minnesota's season had been over for quite some time at that point, and a firing could have happened sooner. Adofo-Mensah had also signed a multi-year extension with the team just a year beforehand.

Due to the odd timing of the firing, the Vikings prioritized draft prep over putting together a search for a new general manager. Minnesota has had an interim general manager throughout that time by the name of Rob Brzezinski. He is going to be in consideration for the job as well, and he seems to have a decent amount of support from within the building.

Steelers Are Probably Entering Final Season With Andy Weidl Regardless

There is a chance that the Vikings could decide to move forward with Brzezinski for the 2026 season and then with hiring a new general manager after the 2026 season comes to a close. Weidl would still be an option for the job, just like he would be for any general manager gig that opens up. His name is hot for a job, which means he probably doesn't have much time left in Pittsburgh.

What do you think about Weidl potentially ending up in Minnesota? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
