The Pittsburgh Steelers lucked into an instant home run-type of linebacker when they drafted Ryan Shazier. Pittsburgh selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 15th overall pick. Shazier quickly became a star and was considered the next big thing on this Pittsburgh defense, earning two Pro Bowl selections. It seemed like Shazier was about to become the next all-time great within the Steelers defense.

Ryan Shazier poses with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 15th pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft.

However, in 2017, he suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury. That injury ended his NFL career in heartbreaking fashion. Shazier had only a 20 percent chance to walk again, but he surpassed those limits and proved the odds wrong by learning to walk again. He was later hired by former head coach Mike Tomlin to become an assistant in 2024, although that stint lasted only one season.

Shazier has not coached since and now spends his time as a Steelers Alumni Relations Assistant. While speaking with Kyle Odegard via Casino Guru News, Shazier revealed a powerful statement about his future coaching plans, or lack thereof. Despite once appearing to be a long-term coaching candidate within the Steelers organization, Shazier made it clear that his focus has shifted away from the sidelines for now.

"The on-field stuff is amazing, and I really did enjoy it," Shazier said while speaking with Odegard. "But a better fit for me and where I’m at in my life is more of the off-field stuff, being more engaging with the fans, the sponsors. It’s a better role for me. But it did feel good being a part of the Xs and Os when I was part of it."

After briefly stepping into a coaching role under Tomlin in 2024, he chose not to pursue another year in that capacity. Or maybe it was more or so Tomlin didn't bring him back. Instead, he has remained involved with the team in a different way, staying connected to the franchise that drafted him while prioritizing life beyond coaching. In his conversation with Odegard, Shazier emphasized that while he is not ruling anything out completely, there are no immediate plans to return to coaching.

Shazier’s story is one of resilience, perspective, and redefining what life after football can look like. From becoming a rising defensive star in Pittsburgh to overcoming a devastating spinal injury, his journey has already gone far beyond the game itself.

Steelers Watch As Shazier's Legacy Grows In Pittsburgh

While many expected him to naturally transition into a long-term coaching career, Shazier’s recent comments make it clear that his priorities have evolved. Instead of chasing the next step on the sidelines, he has chosen to remain connected to the Steelers in a different capacity while focusing on balance and purpose off the field.

That does not completely close the door on coaching in the future, but it does reinforce that there is no urgency behind that decision. For Steelers fans, Shazier remains a powerful reminder of both what he once was on the field and what he continues to represent within the organization today. Shazier is excited to watch this new era of Steeler football get underway with Mike McCarthy at the helm.
