The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially begun the first part of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) during the 2026 offseason, and this has been an interesting time as fans are able to get a glimpse of how new head coach Mike McCarthy will be running things. Fans are also able to get a first look at rookies practicing with the rest of the team, as well as a sneak peek at how both the offensive and defensive units might look. This is an interesting time of year for every team across the NFL, and Pittsburgh is no different considering how many changes have taken place so far in the 2026 offseason.

Now that veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially back in Pittsburgh, one of the biggest storylines for the franchise throughout the rest of the 2026 offseason is going to be the offensive line. Max Iheanachor and Gennings Dunker are going to be the focus of a lot of fans, but Broderick Jones is also a player to keep an eye on as he battles back from a serious neck injury that he suffered during the 2025 season. He has been out on the field during the start of OTAs, but he has not been cleared for any sort of contact. His status for the start of training camp and the start of the regular season is unknown, but he spoke to the media after practice on Wednesday and addressed his injury timeline.
"Not really, I really don't have a timeline," Jones said. "They never gave me a timeline. They're just monitoring it day by day. We'll go from there."
Jones' injury involved his neck, which is obviously something extremely serious that cannot be toyed with. Both the player and the franchise need to be very careful with easing him back into things, and it is nothing that is going to be rushed by the organization. Pittsburgh has two capable starters at tackle in Troy Fautanu and Dylan Cook, as well as Iheanachor.

Jones initially hurt his neck during a regular season game against the Chicago Bears in the 2025 season. He missed the rest of the year, and the injury is still a problem at this point. It is fair to assume that the injury is a big reason that the franchise turned down the fifth-year option on Jones' rookie deal, and it also played a factor in the organization selecting Iheanachor in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Jones was asked about how much he can participate in practices at this time of the year.
"A little bit of [individual work]," Jones said. "No team, really. So really just [individual work]. The whole process man, this is my first serious injury. It's all new to me. Just trying to figure it out. But you know, I got a great support system around me with the Steelers and with my family, I just got to continue to do what I can do."
The offensive lineman pointed out that all he can take part in at this juncture is part of individual drills with the offensive line, but he can't do any team drills. This sounds pretty standard for a neck injury, and teams don't do any full contact work during OTAs anyway.
Steelers' Broderick Jones Could Miss The Start Of The 2026 Season
It is fair to assume that Jones will be limited to begin training camp, which will certainly set him back. It is important to make sure there is no risk with him getting on the field again before clearing him due to the severity of neck injuries, and that could lead him to miss the start of the 2026 season.

His time in Pittsburgh will probably be over after the 2026 season, and there is a real possibility he has played his last snap in the black and gold.
What do you think about Jones' comments? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
