Whenever Pittsburgh Steelers fans watched DK Metcalf become involved in an alleged altercation with a Detroit Lions fan during the latter part of the 2025 NFL season, any talk of a silver lining quickly disappeared. The NFL ultimately issued Metcalf a hefty fine, and he was forced to miss the final two regular season games at a critical point in Pittsburgh’s AFC North and playoff push.

Despite that setback, the Steelers still managed to win the AFC North, but their postseason run ended abruptly with a first-round home loss by 24 points. Now, heading into the 2026 season with Aaron Rodgers back under center, Metcalf is reportedly focused on redemption. However, Metcalf will have to get that redemption with Mike McCarthy as his head coach now that Mike Tomlin has walked away from coaching.
According to Steelers insider Jim Wexell, there is a growing sense that Metcalf is approaching 2026 with a different edge and motivation than fans have seen before. That shift in mindset has fueled speculation that what was once considered a severe mistake could ultimately become a turning point that benefits the Steelers moving forward.
"Sorry to interrupt, but DK looks like a guy who is very sorry. He doesn’t want to talk about what he did last year, but really wants to make up for it," Wexell said. "He looks really determined."
Whenever the Steelers traded to land Metcalf, there were immediate expectations that the offense could become lethal overnight. At the time, Pittsburgh still had wide receiver George Pickens, and the idea of pairing Metcalf and Pickens on opposite sides was expected to create nightmares for opposing NFL secondaries.

Unfortunately, the Steelers later traded Pickens away and entered the 2025 season with Metcalf as their clear WR1, which created issues throughout the year. While the idea of adding a superstar like Metcalf was meant to elevate the wide receiver room and improve its overall maturity, Metcalf’s outburst that led to a two-game suspension and a wave of negative headlines created more headaches than Pickens ever had.
Meanwhile, Pickens went on to have a career year in Dallas, while Metcalf finished the 2025 season in Pittsburgh with 59 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns. While not a bad season, it fell short of what Steelers fans expected, especially when they saw Pickens post 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys.
Steelers Should See Career Year Out Of DK Metcalf In 2026
Hearing Wexell say that Metcalf is motivated is still exciting, though. After a down year, Metcalf returns in 2026 with Rodgers, along with Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, and other weapons to help take attention off him. With a stronger supporting cast, Metcalf could be in line for a career year.

Metcalf didn’t have a bad year in 2025, but it was far from what many had hoped for when the Steelers made headlines to land him. Now, with a stronger supporting cast, the expectation is that he will surpass and potentially shatter what he did in the 2025 season. It’s also important to note that Metcalf was on track for 1,000 yards before his two-game suspension.
He started the playoff game hot against the Houston Texans, but after a critical, disturbing dropped pass from Metcalf, the offense never got going again and the Steelers lost by 24 points. All of that plays into the 2026 season, where Metcalf is looking to right his wrongs and come back stronger.
