Steelers' Mike McCarthy Could Finally Unlock Pittsburgh's Offense In 2026

For years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been searching for consistency in the offense. The unit often looks predictable, boring, and, quite frankly, scared to step outside of their comfort zone. The game of football we all know and love has changed tremendously, yet the Steelers have not made much of an effort to change the offensive scheme whatsoever. Whether it was Matt Canada or Arthur Smith, the offense lacked flavor and never had the swag or flare for any sort of explosiveness. Many people believe the common factor to that problem was former head coach Mike Tomlin wanting to hire very average coordinators.

This is why Steeler Nation is now very excited for new head coach Mike McCarthy to take over this year. The excitement wasn't quite there at first among the fan base, but the optimism has grown now that the full staff is in place, and because of all the recent offseason acquisitions. McCarthy is a very offensive-minded coach, and his resume is impressive to say the least. He has coached many elite quarterbacks and has helped elevate their games under his leadership, most notably Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh is hoping that the experience he brings immediately elevates the offense.

With Rodgers being back for what is officially his last season, there is hope that both parties can turn back the clock and become a very good offense. Throughout Rodgers’ career, he has thrived in offenses where he gets to control protections, make adjustments at the line, and attack defenses down the field -- all of which McCarthy’s offense thrives on. During his tenure in Dallas, the offensive stats ranked 17th, 1st, 1st, 4th, and 21st in points per game each season. In the yards per game stat, the offense ranked 14th, 1st, 11th, 5th, and 17th. Those stats are very appealing to Steelers fans after suffering through bottom-of-the-barrel offense in recent years.

McCarthy’s experience with quarterbacks could also potentially play huge roles in developing Drew Allar and Will Howard. A lot of Steelers fans think highly of Howard, and McCarthy does as well and has publicly expressed his excitement about Howard.

Another thing to think about with McCarthy is how he will likely use Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. Washington had his fair share of targets in the passing offense last season and played a big role, but was often limited to certain routes due to the lack of use in the middle of the field. Freiermuth saw a significant drop off in his targets and was used not even close to the amount he usually was in prior years. That should all change in 2026.

Steelers' Passing Game Should Upgrade In 2026 With McCarthy

A big question from last year's roster was why the team failed to add a consistent second weapon at wideout. McCarthy will not have to worry about that with the addition of Michael Pittman Jr. via trade from Indianapolis. The Steelers also addressed wideouts in the draft, selecting Germie Bernard from Alabama in the second round at 47th overall. Pairing those two guys with DK Metcalf makes the wide receiving core immediately better.

Rico Dowdle also signed via free agency with the Steelers, filling the hole left by Kenneth Gainwell departing to Tampa Bay. Jaylen Warren and Dowdle will provide a great 1-2 punch in McCarthy’s offense.

The upcoming season in Pittsburgh has a lot of buzz around it, and the fans are getting restless over the lack of success in the playoffs and the mediocre results of the last decade. McCarthy looks to steady the ship and provide immediate success.
