Steelers Wide Receiver Germie Bernard Has "Athletic Ceiling" In Shocking New Claim

The Pittsburgh Steelers lacked wide receiver depth in the 2026 offseason. Pittsburgh star receiver DK Metcalf was forced to handle a lot of the load in the passing game in 2025. When Metcalf served a two-game suspension, the Steelers' offense didn't have another pass-catcher who came close to filling his shoes. The front office made it a point of emphasis this past March to add more weapons on offense. They did so when they traded for Michael Pittman Jr. They then added another weapon in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft in Germie Bernard

Bernard will come into a receiver room that's top-heavy with Pittman and Metcalf, where he will get more of an opportunity in the slot. The Steelers need a player who can run short and intermediate routes, can create separation, and, at times, make a big play. Bernard fits that mold. He consistently grew as a receiver in college and went from being more of a special teamer, to a bona fide number one receiver at the University of Alabama. After Pittsburgh refrained from drafting a receiver in round one, it traded up six spots from 53 to 47 to draft Bernard.

Bernard plays smartly and is an incredible blocker. He does the little things right, and that's what Steelers brass looks for in receivers. However, Pro Football Focus believes that while Bernard can be a good player from the start, there won't be much development. This claim appeared in the Steelers' draft recap on their website, where they analyzed every draft pick made by the team.

"Bernard has developed into a solid, high-floor receiver with good nuance and football IQ, though his limited physical and athletic ceiling projects him more as a depth option than a consistent contributor," via PFF.com.

Bernard ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash. Though he isn't a vertical burner and is not considered a serious deep threat, his ability to complement the Steelers' existing receivers is what makes him so appealing.

The Steelers have the size and speed threat of Metcalf, who is 6'4" and can make contested catches. They have another big receiver in Pittman, but he is more of an intermediate route runner who can move the chains. Bernard can fit in as a guy who can take the shorter routes and use his speed for run-after-the-catch opportunities. While it's unclear what role Bernard will play in the offense as of now, he is built to be the Steelers' slot receiver.

As previously mentioned, his floor is high. But the organization will hope that Bernard can become more than just an above-average slot receiver. Metcalf and Pittman will be under contract for the next few seasons, but come Bernard's second contract, he could have an opportunity to take on a bigger role, unless he carves one out for himself even sooner. He has the intangibles to be elite, and the consistent development as a collegiate receiver can combat the claim that he doesn't have much room for growth.

The Steelers Could Make A Star Out Of Bernard

Though the receiver room is crowded at the top, Bernard's training camp and preseason will be important for showing coaches that he can be the WR3 in the offense. With new head coach Mike McCarthy at the helm, there will be a significant passing attack. This could really open things up for Bernard. His versatility in different spots in alignments will be another thing that McCarthy will like. At Alabama, Bernard lined up in various spots, even in the backfield. This will help the Steelers' coaching staff open up the playbook with a bunch of different looks, making him a great fit

The Steelers could make Bernard into a serious weapon, no matter how he gets involved. He is fortunate to be coming into a historically pass-first offense with McCarthy, which could help him get more reps as a rookie, hopefully allowing him to blossom into a star.
