The Pittsburgh Steelers will continue to be involved in quarterback speculation as long as there is not a clear-cut long-term answer on the roster. Aaron Rodgers will be under center for another year, but Will Howard and Drew Allar are doing what they can to make impressions on the new coaching staff. The four-time MVP has confirmed that he is planning to retire after the 2026 campaign, so it is anyone's guess as to who will be the starting signal-caller in the Steel City come 2027. A new name has entered the discussion after some serious drama within the college football world.

Brendan Sorsby found himself involved with a gambling scandal that eventually led to him checking into rehab. After legal battles ensued that saw a serious back-and-forth between his camp and the NCAA, there was a short period of time when many believed he would actually be playing for Texas Tech in 2026, and only have to face a two-game suspension.
Then, another injunction was filed that brought that ruling into question. Because of this, the quarterback decided to apply for the NFL's rare Supplemental Draft, which will allow teams to take a chance on him at some point in July, if his application is approved.

Organizations throughout the league would have the opportunity to offer up a hypothetical 2027 selection for Sorsby. Whichever franchise offers the highest bid will get the rights to take him. In the event of a tie, the 2026 draft order will be used to determine the team that brings Sorsby in. On Tuesday's episode of Steelers Collective, insider Ray Fittipaldo was not at all sold that Pittsburgh is planning on getting aggressive for the Texas Tech standout.
"The last time a first-round pick was used on a supplemental player — 1992, the New York Giants selected Dave Brown," Fittipaldo said. "Some other team is probably going to do a second or a third, but I think for the Steelers to do it, just because of what they've done the last two years with Will Howard and Drew Allar, I would say, you know, a fifth, sixth."
This puts General Manager Omar Khan in an interesting situation. He could technically offer a fifth- or sixth-rounder as Fittipaldo suggested, but that isn't likely what will get the job done for a talented signal-caller like Sorsby. On the other side of things, his market may be relatively weak because of questions surrounding his off-the-field situation. There are a lot of variables that are coming into play.

The 2027 class of quarterbacks, the one that Sorsby was supposed to be part of, is expected to be rather stout. Teams out there may want to see how the collegiate season plays out instead of giving up a second or third-rounder for someone available in the Supplemental Draft. Essentially, Khan putting a fifth-round pick on the table could actually be enough if no one else is willing to offer anything better.
Steelers Don't Have Enough Reps To Go Around For Sorsby
Pittsburgh will be giving Rodgers all of the time with the offense once the meaningful practices begin. On top of that, developing Allar and Howard is a top priority for the organization. Going after someone like Sorsby would just add even more confusion to an already-complicated depth chart.

The Steelers could certainly do their due diligence when it comes to Sorsby and attend his upcoming Pro Day, but it's doubtful that the team will actually go out on a limb to try and get him into the locker room.
