The Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to hire Mike McCarthy was not initially celebrated. It took Steeler Nation a couple of weeks to come around to the reality of McCarthy becoming the team’s head coach for the 2026 season and beyond. However, when McCarthy finally got the chance to be introduced and became emotional during his press conference, the fan base seemed to truly rally around him. His attitude and effort are clearly going to be there, but ultimately winning games and, most importantly, winning playoff games is what will determine whether McCarthy satisfies this fan base.

Steelers fans are starving to get back to winning meaningful postseason games and making deep Super Bowl runs. To accomplish that, the franchise’s newest additions such as Rico Dowdle will need to have stellar campaigns. McCarthy was excited to reunite with Dowdle, and the feeling was mutual for the veteran running back.

While speaking with Teresa Varley, Dowdle explained just how fortunate Steeler Nation is to have McCarthy from his perspective. The two spent time together with the Dallas Cowboys, giving Dowdle a firsthand look at the qualities that have made McCarthy one of the NFL’s most respected coaches. According to Dowdle, Pittsburgh is getting far more than just a Super Bowl-winning coach.

"He's a players' coach," Dowdle said. "He's a great leader. He can lead his team. He is from Pittsburgh, so I know he loves that. You have your guy here. It would mean more to him to hold that trophy up here in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is a great football place. When you hear Pittsburgh, you think football."

Dowdle spent several seasons in Dallas developing under McCarthy before ultimately breaking out in 2024 with a 1,000-yard season. He followed that up with another strong year in 2025 with the Carolina Panthers, continuing to establish himself as a reliable and productive running back at the NFL level.

Now, he will look to make it three straight 1,000-yard seasons with the Black and Gold, joining Jaylen Warren in the backfield.

"Even when I played for Coach McCarthy back in Dallas, when we were talking about Pittsburgh, when we came here and played, he would tell us about the atmosphere, the fan base," Dowdle said. "Getting back with Coach McCarthy, that was a big factor."

The two backs are expected to form a dynamic one-two punch for Pittsburgh. Both bring hard-hitting, physical rushing styles that fit the identity McCarthy and Pittsburgh have long embraced. With the offensive line continuing to gel after another year together, many around the league are expecting this rushing attack under McCarthy to take a major step forward.

Pittsburgh also has additional depth with second-year back Kaleb Johnson in the mix. Between Warren, Dowdle, and Johnson, McCarthy has the personnel to lean into a balanced and punishing ground game. Now, it comes down to execution.

Steelers' Rushing Attack Should Be Great In 2026

For McCarthy, Dowdle, and the rest of the offense, the expectations in Pittsburgh are straightforward. Talent and potential are no longer enough on their own, especially in a city that measures success by postseason wins and championship runs.

If this group can stay healthy and find consistency on the ground, the Steelers believe they have the pieces to become one of the more physical and productive rushing attacks in the league. Now, it is about turning that belief into results when it matters most.
