The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2026 season surrounded by uncertainty under new head coach Mike McCarthy, and the pressure to deliver is immediate on both sides of the ball. While the offense remains the obvious focal point for improvement, the defense cannot afford another year of underwhelming results after failing to consistently meet expectations despite significant investment.

Year after year, Pittsburgh’s defense has ranked among the league’s most expensive and heavily funded units, yet the returns have not always matched the spending. Too often, the group has been vulnerable to explosive plays, with opponents finding easy yardage in chunks and, at times, turning the secondary into a target in critical moments.
That reality is a major reason the Steelers brought in Patrick Graham as their new defensive coordinator to work alongside McCarthy in his first year at the helm. Graham arrives in Pittsburgh with a reputation for maximizing limited resources, earning praise for his ability to limit explosive plays during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders, even without a top-tier defensive payroll.
Amid the coaching changes and headline-grabbing moves this offseason, one signing has largely flown under the radar. The Steelers added veteran defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day on a two-year, $11 million deal, a move that didn’t generate the same buzz as other additions but could end up carrying far more significance than expected.
According to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, Steelers fans may want to start paying closer attention. Schatz believes Joseph-Day is being overlooked and could quietly emerge as one of the most important backup pieces on the roster, behind only Nick Herbig in terms of undervalued depth.
"Non-starter to know: DT Sebastian Joseph-Day," Schatz said. "The most important non-starter is Herbig, but we covered him already, so let's look at some of the strong depth on Pittsburgh's interior defensive line. Joseph-Day had 41 combined tackles and two sacks for Tennessee last season. The 31-year-old veteran also provides versatility because he can play either 5-tech end or nose for the Steelers."
Herbig is easily the most impactful non-starter on the roster, although many would argue he barely qualifies as one. In most organizations, he would already be a starting edge rusher given his talent level. But in Pittsburgh, he sits behind TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith, giving the Steelers one of the deepest groups at the position. That reality is exactly why Herbig doesn’t fit the traditional definition of a backup.

That context makes the addition of Joseph-Day even more intriguing. While the move hasn’t generated much fanfare, it could quietly become one of those under-the-radar depth signings that helps Pittsburgh steal a few extra wins and, if things break right, finally end its playoff drought.
Steelers Have Exciting Veteran Hiding On The Defensive Line
Joseph-Day brings a résumé that includes a Super Bowl ring and more than 90 career starts, along with a veteran presence that matters in any locker room. At 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, he is built to be a force against the run, giving the Steelers a physical interior presence.

The key is that he won’t be asked to carry a full-time starting workload. Instead, Pittsburgh can deploy him as a rotational piece, maximizing his effectiveness in controlled snaps. In that role, his impact could be even more pronounced in key short-yardage and early-down situations.
Joseph-Day is expected to rotate alongside Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and Derrick Harmon in 2026, forming a deep interior group that should keep Pittsburgh fresh and disruptive. If the Steelers rebound under Graham, it may be these kinds of overlooked additions that make the difference.
