The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into training camp with four quarterbacks on the roster, and a decision must be made before the regular season begins. Aaron Rodgers is locked in as the starter. Drew Allar is the long-term project. However, the battle between Mason Rudolph and Will Howard for what comes next is one of the most fascinating roster situations in the entire NFL right now, and one trusted voice in Steelers media just dropped a take on how Pittsburgh should play it that nobody else is saying out loud.

On a recent episode of the Locked On Steelers podcast, Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette broke down Pittsburgh's quarterback room heading into camp and made a case that will get Steelers fans talking. Carter is not interested in Pittsburgh cutting anyone and hoping for the best. He argues that the Steelers should use training camp itself as the tool, let the competition play out, build the market value on whichever quarterback ends up on the outside looking in, and then make a trade that brings something back to the organization.
"If Will Howard's close enough to Mason Rudolph, then maybe that's the carrot they dangle. Say, 'Hey, veteran backup quarterback who's won multiple games, who's helped, who's been in the playoffs, started in the playoffs, he's available, who wants him?' But if Will Howard's not that guy, they're going to be like, 'Will's great, Will's awesome,' and they're going to hope that they can drive up a price so that someone gives them something for Will Howard and then they could go forward with their plan of Mason being their number two, Drew Allar being their number three."
That is not a complicated idea, but it is an important one. Carter is essentially telling the Steelers to stop thinking about this as a problem to solve and start thinking about it as leverage to use. Pittsburgh does not need to tip their hand early. They do not need to name a backup before a single padded practice has happened. They let both quarterbacks compete. They let the rest of the league watch. Then, they move when the moment is right.

As SteelerNation previously covered, the trade speculation around Rudolph has been building all offseason, and Carter's take only adds to the case that a deal makes far more sense than a quiet roster cut.
Steelers' QB Room Strategy Could Pay Off In A Major Way
The stakes of getting this decision right could not be higher for Pittsburgh. Rodgers has said publicly this is his final NFL season, which means the Steelers are already one year away from potentially starting over at the most important position in football. Every draft pick they can accumulate between now and then is a building block toward that future, and trading a quarterback instead of releasing him for nothing is one of the cleanest ways to add to that stockpile without sacrificing anything on the current roster.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy has praised Howard consistently throughout the spring, and if that praise translates into real development when the pads come on in Latrobe, Pittsburgh will have a very sellable case to make to the league for Rudolph. A veteran backup with playoff starting experience is available at a reasonable price right as training camp injuries start piling up around the NFL. That is exactly when the Steelers' leverage peaks, and that is exactly when General Manager Omar Khan needs to be ready to make the call.
Carter's framework is the right one. Let the competition breathe, drive up the value, and get the trade done. Pittsburgh has a real asset sitting in that quarterback room, and the worst thing they could do is give it away for nothing.
