Steelers Get Shocking News Regarding Broderick Jones' Mysterious Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been relatively quiet recently when it comes to 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones. Of course, Jones’ transition in the Steel City has not been the smoothest, but now that James Campen is in charge of the offensive line, there is reason for optimism surrounding his development. However, the biggest concern has been his mysterious neck injury that he suffered last season during the team's Week 12 matchup versus the Chicago Bears.

After initially being believed to have suffered just a minor stinger injury, Jones was actually dealing with a severe, long-term neck issue. The history of those types of injuries did not bode well for the young offensive tackle, who was already trying to change the narrative after some fans began labeling him a bust. During the 2026 offseason, Jones underwent spinal fusion surgery, a procedure designed to help stabilize his vertebrae.

It appears the surgery was successful after Steelers General Manager Omar Khan spoke to several members of the Pittsburgh media on Tuesday. Khan confirmed that Jones has been cleared to return and will be back on the field Wednesday, although the team will be smart with how they progress him. For Jones, this marks a crucial opportunity to get back on track and prove why Pittsburgh selected him in the first round just a few years ago.

"Other than that, that will be it. You guys have asked a lot about Broderick," Khan added. "Broderick has done a really good job at getting better. He's in a good place, and he's been cleared to go. Obviously, we will be smart in terms of how we progress him, but you guys will see him out there on Wednesday."

Now, of course, this does not change the simple fact that Khan decided to decline exercising Jones’ $19.07 million fifth-year rookie contract option. That means once the 2026 season ends, Jones will become an unrestricted free agent instead of remaining under team control through 2027.

That decision was a telling sign of where Khan currently views his first-ever draft pick after trading up to select Jones. Every pundit expected Jones to be a project coming out of college, and so far, that has been the case. The flashes of talent and potential have been there at times, but so have the inconsistencies and flaws that have slowed his development.

Steelers' Offensive Line Gains Another Reason For Optimism

Now, with an experienced offensive line coach like Campen and a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, who has a strong history of developing high-level offensive line play, the hope is that Jones can finally take the next step. Hearing Khan confirm that Jones will not begin the season on the PUP list is surprising news to many and an exciting development for the Steelers. This young offensive line now gets Jones back in the mix, where he can compete for a starting tackle role or provide valuable depth once he is fully healthy.

For Jones, this is about more than just getting back on the field. This is about proving that the story is not finished yet. The Steelers have invested a lot into finding the right environment for him to succeed, and now the excuses are gone. With his health trending in the right direction, a new offensive line coach, and a fresh opportunity in front of him, Jones has everything he needs to remind everyone why Pittsburgh believed enough to trade up and make him a first-round pick.
